Lately I have been having the worst headaches. Everyone says these come with menopause along with the other lovely symptoms. Anyone else have this problem? I will go to our family dr. to find out for sure. Also, they can be from too much coffee.

The caffine makes the hot flashes worse also Mary, ask me how I know  Hang in there. Thank God it's over for me. I'm actually starting to feel the cold again now that the weight is off.

Mary,

I get headaches from not enough coffee. I don't drink coffee much in the hot months and when it first warms up and I stop drinking it, I have killer headaches.

Lately though I have been having debilitating headaches. Not all the time but often enough. Also been having hotflashes. I keep wonder how young menopause can start. My mother passed on a few years ago so I can't ask her when she started. I also plan to go to the doctor but never remember until I am having a headache and then I am in too much pain.

Gina, my grandmother went thru menopause when she was 27. I think you should talk to your family dr., there might be other things going on.

I was just sent this from one of my readers. She kindly allowed me to share this with all of you.

Mary:

In the event this may help you, I felt I should tell you my experience with headaches "at your age". I went on hormone replacement therapy as most of us were told we should do when I was 48 and just beginning menopause. I suffered with migraines soon after but at first didn't realize they were even migraines. Over a 10 yr period:

I was given strong medication which initially I had to inject (they later came out with a pill);
I had migraines twice a month for 3 days each;
I went to 3 neurologists, an ENT (who did surgery on my nose thinking a bone spurr might be the cause); a physologist for stress management; an optomitrist for new glasses;
I removed many things from my diet trying to find an allergy; I had 2 years of allergy shots as I tested positive for allergy to dust and was told that could be the cause. I purchased special bedcoverings to eliminate dust mites.

I remember mentioning to my OBGYN that my migraines began around the time I started the hormones. My OBGYN wouldn't hear of my stopping the hormones and "poo pooed" the idea that there was a relationship to the migraines.

Two years ago when the news broke out that you shouldn't be on hormones more than 5 yrs. and it wasn't good for everyone, etc. my present OBGYN of course took me off as I had been on them for 10 yrs. From the time I was off the hormones to this day I have not had a migraine.

Good luck to you with your headaches and please keep the above in mind, for what it is worth and feel free to pass on the information.

Mary, do you keep a food diary and a record of the headaches? I went to see my Dr. regarding mograine and he suggested I do this in case there were foods that were triggering the headaches. It came about that I got the bad heads regular as clockwork, immediately after I started my period so they were conclusively hormonal in origin. I now have some great medicine that works for me to stop them before they begin.

The other embaressing t hing to mention is like Pudge if I stop drinking coffee I get the heads. It can take 3 days for these withdrawal headaches to work out of the system and the thing that relieves them is :coffee2: I am addicted - I only have 2-3 cups a day but that's enough.

I haven't had a migrane since I went into menopause. I use to get them really bad right before a period. Not everytime just sometimes. They also felt like a sinus headache until the doctor dianoised it as migraines.

I have a friend who suffers every month from terrible migraines that occur just before her cycle. Her doc finally put her on the new birthcontrol pill where you don't have a cycle for months and she hasn't had a migraine since. She isn't looking forward to the month she will have a cycle though.
If I have a headache I know it is because I haven't had my dose of caffeine for the day and all it takes is one soda and I'm cured. Course if I wasn't addicted to caffeine in the first place I'd be OK. Don't like coffee  and drink decaffeinated tea. Go figure that I get headaches if I miss my one soda. I won't mention that I got to this point drinking a 2 liter bottle of soda every day for many years. It took me a month to finally get to the point I am at today, and I've been here for several years now. Boy, the headaches I had during that month too. Nothing would take it away.

I cut out most caffiene a few years ago since I was having a lot of acid reflux & headaches. I started by mixing my drinks 1/2 caffiene & half caffiene free until I didn't need it anymore. Now when I have a reguler cola I have trouble sleeping so I watch what I drink.
I do get the same headaches now that I am premenapausal. The only thing I have found to help is Excedrin Migraine formula & sudafed (sinus medicine). I have found in the last year I get a lot of sinus blockage that causes headaches. I also get them before my period or when there is a storm on the way (I have had a lot lately).
I hope you find the cause Mary & a cure.

I also was getting a lot of headaches. I bought a mouthguard to use at night because I grind my teeth in my sleep. My headaches have virtually disappeared...except for the monthly ones, which(like Susie mentioned) do feel like sinus headaches. For those, I bought an OTC migraine headache remedy...the dose is two pills, once/day. It contains aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine. It is a miracle drug for me! The only problem with it is that the label warns you not to take any other caffeinated products, so no morning coffee for me that day.
Take care,
Donna

I recently received a writing called "Grandma's Cures" It said drinking two glasses of Gatorade would relieve a headache. Might be worth a try. I don't think it could hurt. My son often gets headaches and migraines (I don't think his is menopausal :nah: .) Often when he is not drinking enough water he gets them. I am going to try the gatorade with him.

You can often get headaches if you don't drink enough water - the idea of the gatorade is so that it gives a sugar rush as well I suppose in case your headache is associated with low blood sugar.

I went on HRT 11 years ago because I was suffering dreadful migraine headaches almost weekly. They lasted 3 days - fine for a few days and then off again. I was on the HRT for 10 years but came off last March after the last scare. Since then it has been hell with hot flushes and night sweats. Sometimes awake 8 or 9 times in the night mopping up. Haven't had a good night's sleep since. I didn't realise symptoms were merely postponed with HRT and that you would suffer when you stopped. I know someone who came off at the same time as me and she has been absolutly fine. Is it me????Anyone else suffering out there ???

Dianne, I don't think the HRT postpones menopause. I thought it was supposed to ease the symptoms. Obviously you are not done yet.

UGH...headaches. I woke up with a doozy today.

I get them all the time, the kind that make you feel nauseous and can't stand light. Mine are from my neck...I have severe spinal arthritis and pinched nerves. If I sleep just the wrong way, I'll wake with one. Pain meds help sometimes.

I'm addicted to coffee, drink 3 pots a day. If I don't I get bad headaches. But lately, just after Christmas, I started getting HORRIBLE headaches, every day....I took Motrin for 2 weeks, ran out of that and tried Nyquil as I thought it might be sinus. Well, it turned out I had the flu! This latest flu to go around is awful. And it starts with a sinus headache. Our whole family had it. We're finally at the tail end of it, but it can last for weeks.

I also get them from being menopausal. I have nasty hot flashes, sleep with the window open and no blanket, lol. I'm only 45, and it's been going on for 5 years. My mom had surgically induced menopause, so we don't know heredity-wise.

So, headaches can have a lot of causes, and looking over what I wrote I seem to have too many of them, lol!!!!!!!!!! Getting old is NOT fun!

:bg: I forgot 1 of my remedies. I use a rice pack (moist heat)at the back of my neck. I have found some of them are caused by tension & stress. With the problems you have had here lately could that be your problem? :bg:

I experimented after Christmas & made some in a U shape like the neck pillows. They work wonderfully. I gave them to a special Ed teacher that keeps her difficult students at lunch so I don't have to deal with them along with everyone else. I told her it was a hug from me. She deals with a lot of difficult children everyday but this 1 just needs to be watched constantly. 1 day he got out of sight of the lunch aides & was outside for 1/2 hour before we found him. He is 6 & moves very fast. When each lunch aide has 40 other kids to watch it is just too easy for him to get lost in the shuffle.

Headaches should always be checked out but for yrs I had horrible headaches, dizzyness, nausea etc. Every dr I saw said it was nothing. Finally my own GP sent me for a cat scan and they found advance stage of degenerative disease in my neck, too late to do anything for it so now I live with that pain every day so please make sure you exercise your neck if you sit at the computer alot. This can definately contribute to bad headaches.

I thought I would add my 2 cents here.....
About 7 years ago I suffered with a headache for right at 6 weeks. I know you are thinking what took you so long to get that one treated...right??
I woke up with a headache, it stuck around all day and at night it was there as well. I tried everythink I could think of at home. My DH kept telling me it couldn't be that bad. He really thought that it was in my head...it was!!!
During this time I lost 28 pounds, I never had an appitite and I wasn't sleeping worth a darn.
When I finally went to the Dr they did a sent me to an eye Dr to rule out eye problems and I went for a CT scan to rule out a brain tumor. When the Dr. gave me the results of the CT ( no brain tumor) he also gave me a shot that he assured me would knock out the headache! Needless to say it made me a little tired but that headache was still there!
After some blood work it was found that I had Graves Disease...my thyroid was in OVER drive!! The Dr was worried I was going to have a stroke, my blood pressure was a little high too.

I knew that thyroid disease ran in my family as about 7 years prior I had a small tumor removed from my underactive thyroid. I suppose the thyroid decided to work and was on overdrive!!

Headaches for sure need to be checked out! ( I will say I enjoyed the weightloss!)

mgf~

Susie,
This is exactly how I was. To a T! Guess that is one plus to aging, I do not hardly ever have a headache. It is wonderful. I also found dairy products would sometimes bring my migranes on and weather fronts. This is the first time I have posted so I am not sure if I done it right. I sure enjoy this forum. Have a great eveing . BJ :nervous:

Hello all, I have just rejoined here after a lengthly time off. I have had some headaches as well. The Drs. always told me "it's all in your head. Well anyway. I have found something that has helped me and that is acupressure teatments. Not acupuncture but just like a massage only much harder. I'm not saying it would work for everyone but it sure helped me.

Oh if you heard half the things I say to drs you would cringe lol As a matter of fact went to the cardiologist today and nurse says to strip from waist up, so of course I asked her what do I do with my ice cream cones. She said what ice cream cones? Told her when I bend over the boobs look exactly like ice cream cones...she had to leave the room. Then when all done she is booking an apt of some sort and she says how is 2:30 sound? I said no my tooth isn't hurting. She said "huh" again I repeated my tooth didn't hurt. Told her say 2:30 real fast like you just did, sounds like "tooth hurting" ROFL

Good one .Sometimes I think Drs. are the stupidest people around. Well not really, but they make a guy think that sometimes. One other thing I was going to mention about the hot flashes. The lady I have been getting acupressure treatments from also told me that taking Kelp everyday would help keep them to a bare minimum. I have tried them and they have helped. I have been taking them twice a day, 1 tab in the am and 1 at night. Better than more dr. drugs I say.

I had a scarey moment when I was going for a steroid injection in my shoulder when the nurse told me to take my trousers off but leave my pants on. "Why?"
"So we can give you the injection"
"In my shoulder"
"No, in your hip"
"I don't want it in my hip, I am here for my shoulder"
"I think I know where it goes"
"Would you check my notes please?" Nurse goes away
"Right, Mrs Hodge, If you could just take your top off..."

No mention of HER mistake or an apology...comes of being so polite I guess but I was ready to run....
