I have a vintage pattern for a childs coat, hat and bib overalls. I am going to make 6 sets in varing sizes 1 through 7. I have some tricot that is flannel backed for the lining. For the girls the outerwear will be a deep redish/rust and for the boys I chose hunter green. I will attempt to post pictures once it is all made. Has anyone ever made wool coats? I am going to make the legs with zippers for ease in getting dressed. The coats will also have zippers and then metal snaps to cover the zipper. I actually had a coat set like this when I was 7. It was plaid wool and my mom made it. I was so proud of that set. When I got older (10) I thought ..oh my god that was ugly. She (my mom) put fur around the hat to "frame" my face..lol I will not use fur on these, but I do think it is once again it is an adorable set. When I made coats for Beaglewear last year, I learned so many tricks and intend on using a few of them with these. A few years back, when I first joined the site, I made a water proof set (jacket & bib overalls) for my daughter to go snow boarding. It was so nice. She still has it. I can not however find any more fabric like that. It was all water proof and Jo Anns has not had it since. Happy Sewing Serenity (threads_40) "The struggle is not greater than the goal". Be blessed. Would a modern day wool blend -- that looks and feels like wool but has less itch and is easier to clean -- be better for kids? Just a thought. Dorothy |

Could be. But this is a very soft wool and not as itchy as you would think. I am going to do a itch test with my grands when I return home. Serenity(threads_40) "The struggle is not greater than the goal". Be blessed. Stay encouraged.

Well if you already have the wool you should use it. I thought if you were still looking for fabric a blend might be more child friendly. I just made myself a 100 percent wool coat and it is beautiful. No itch at all. Dorothy |

Serenity- Actually the coat is a cape kind of thing. McCall's 7895 and is very comfortable. It's a tiny houndstooth teal and black. The lining is a teal with little orange flames and a lady with a 1940's hairstyle drinking a martini printed all over it. I found some gorgeous glass buttons -- one square and one triangular. It has a collar and I stitched the sides together for about a foot. It is very light and very warm and was inexpensive since I picked up the fabric in the New York City garment district. The buttons were about $6 each but, with only two, they were worth it. I'm very proud of it. Dorothy |
