I was diagnosed with hypercusis yesterday...it's a fancy way of saying I've been living in loud noise too much, my ears ring and now I can't stand to hear loud things anymore. (all due to my friend the mystery thumping stereo I hear in my home.....)
I had a sound engineer come in a couple of weeks ago...the noise is subsonic (only about 5 % of the population can hear that and it's mostly women and children...and animals), probably in someones basement ( yes we have basements here in FL...not many, but a few...they're walkouts (the front of the house is against a hill and you can walk out the back downstairs))
It's againt the law to hear someones stereo more than 100 ft from the source. So far no one has been willing to help me, except people on a site in Yahoo. They've written e-mails to everyone they can think of to get me some help...so far nothing...
The sheriff's dept won't come out, the police won't come out, the Environmental people who's job it IS to investigate these things and make them stop, won't answer my phone calls anymore. The city council won't talk to me. I've written to the local state reps, the gov (Jeb), I've even tried Oprah and Dear Abby...
All I want is to find the stereo and get it turned off.....

The various Dr's I've seen will give me 'anti-anxiety' pills and sleeping pills...
I'm told I can sue...sue who ???
So in order to live in my home, like I did before Aug. I have to take pills (I've never taken btw) and sue people....

Does this seem 'right' to you ??? I find it odd....weird....and crazy....and I'm living it...

I so sorry to hear that you're still having that problem. I thought you had finally found the source of the sound on the next block behind you where a bunch of hippy-type people are/were living?

Yep...I heard a stereo there, the people across the street hear a stereo there, I'm told there is no stereo there....I can't prove it, so what can be done ??? The sheriff's dept no longer takes my calls, so nothing is being done...

I'd never heard of hypercusis either....I just know whats happening to me, but I understand it's a pretty common problem with people who hear or are exposed to loud, or subsonic sound for long periods....

I'm gonna get to the bottom of this problem or else.....I will not be a victim of others stupidity.....I'm old (hee hee), and tired of the stuff people do to others all the time, with no regard to feelings or responsibility.

What you have is common in people who work around heavy machinery, in factories where there is lots of machines and in the music industry. Where I used to work, (in a factory), OSHA came in a couple of times a year to check sound levels among other things. We had to have hearing test once a year. The noise did give some people I work with problems. I have a problem with loud noises. But its not to the point your at. I haven't worked since last April and it is getting so the noise level doesn't brother me as much.

I feel for you. I have the same problem only I know where it's coming from and it's my next door neighbor who my husband grew up with so there's not much I can do. We've already had "the talk".

He plays his stereo but all I hear is the bass, the sound literally vibrates my eardrum along with our kitchen walls. Thank god I don't have pictures on the walls otherwise they'd fall off.

He doesn't play the stereo loud, only sometimes, then I sing along with it, but the vibration is unbearable.

My husband says, "what noise, I don't hear any noise". Personally, I think he's nuts, how could he not hear or feel it? I think I'll mention this to him.

I hope it's ok to post a link to this site...looks like they have a non narcotic product which could help with your problem.

Thats Ok Sew....my husband doesn't hear the stereo in our home either...only 5 women on my block hear it. (me and 4 others) NONE of the men do...But YOU do have rights....everyone has local nuisance laws. And it's up to you to protect your rights. I'd call the local law enforcement and tell them the neighbor is too noisey. (he may be a 'friend' of your husbands, but that shouldn't matter...he's making too much noise) The vibration will cause you health problems and possibly house problems (cracks in the walls and ceilings).

Ear plugs are not recommended for me, thanks anyway...subsonic stereo noise is felt as well as heard and ear plugs intensify the sound. (as do headphones) I'm seeing audiologist #2 next week to see what HE has to say.
#1 said good luck and theres nothing she can do for me...but she did refer me to #2....

Dear Lord can you hear me now? My husband gets so ticked off at me when I complain about this. He hands me those ear phones that you see men with chainsaws wearing and says, "here put these on honey". So, I put those on along with those flexible earplugs the airline pilots wear. I told him it amplifies the sound, and he doesn't believe me. Ohhhhhhhh! :bang: :bang: :bang:

C'mon, sing with me: You are not alone...

5% of the population, women and children. That means there's no use complaining to a man (no harm intended here). Have you tried contacting the newspapers? Television? They are the ones who could probably get the ball rolling for you. You have nothing to lose at this point.

Had a local paper give me a front page story last month...nothing has happened (except now the sheriff's dept hangs up on me when I call to try and get the car stereos OFF the street). The stereo noise is still in my house. (right now it's rattling the windows) and no one will take my calls. It's like I don't exsist. I have a copy of an e-mail from a sheriff here, telling a friend of mine I don't hear a stereo in my home, no one plays a stereo 24 hrs a day.......hhhhmmmmm.......now if I hear it, the people behind me and on my block hear it....and it's not there....I have it !!!! we REALLY ARE living in the 'twilight zone'......
So I have the option to sue....I have 7 car tag #'s....thats $300. and more a car to sue. (plus court costs and such...)because I don't know from hour to hour, which of the cars it is, since I can't see them, unless I drive out there every hour on the hour and try to find them by the noise. I can try suing the city, the county and the sheriff's office....hahahahahahaha.....yeah right...
I'm in contact with a no boomers web site, www.noiseoff.com if it weren't for them I wouldn't have gotten the newspaper report. (thats also where the sheriff said I don't really hear a stereo 24 hrs a day..he said that to more than one person...)( I donno....at 2:20 am this morning....I was still awake and it was on....thats why I was awake....it's now 1:35 pm and it's STILL on....I mean thats only 12 hours, but hey...I bettcha it'll be on at 2 am tomorrow).

So my last option is to move...I'll do that, as soon as the $10,000 dollars worth of hurricane damage is paid off....and if theres anywhere to go. (we're suffering a housing shortage here..and housing that costs much more than it did a year ago...a 40 yr old 1400 sq ft brick house, no updates, NO GARAGE
sold for $161,000 3 wks ago....last year it would have sold for $77,000 if they were lucky.....thats just weird.....and getting weirder by the day...it's not even on the water....)( I don't know why people who live in a hurricane prone state like to build on the water....then they cry when the house is washed away/damaged)(I don't live near the water......)
Sorrry I got carried away...I'm just angry and upset all the time....the drugs aren't working I guess....
