After reading about PatternReview.com in the sewing forums, I signed up as a free member. I am considering signing up for yearly membership to be able to access some of the other features offered. Two classes--zippers and hems--currently offered sound interesting. I've taken 1 class locally in how to sew in a hand-picked zipper. Some of the other applications mentioned here would be very helpful to learn from a pro instead of from a book.

I'm looking for some comments on Patternreview.com membership and if you think the classes are worth the $35 or $39 fee. I am on a tight budget (medical pay) so have to be very discriminating about how I spend my funds and decide the most cost-efficient way to upgrade my intermediate knowledge and sewing skills.
Many thanks,
Amy

Sorry Amy, I haven't taken any of those classes. I do believe however, there are reviews of the classes posted on the Pattern Review site.

Hi, Mary: No one seems to feel like chatting about this... Thanks for the link. Here's a description of the zipper class:
Installing perfect zippers requires only one thing: A system and a good set of directions to follow. Most people don't have good luck installing zippers with the directions on the zipper package, or the instructions inside pattern envelopes because they don't give clear precise directions.

We give you both! Zippers need not be hard, nor trying. Learn to install several zipper types without a tear or a long hard sigh.
- Lapped Zipper, used in skirts, pants, and home dec sewing.
- Fly front zippers, including how to insure a perfect waist band match on both sides of the zipper.
- Invisible zippers installed via factory, no fail methods, and how to finish the neck and waist area without one hand stitch!
- Also included is an easy method for installing perfect center slot zipper at a neckline or center back of a skirt or pants.
- Exposed Zipper For foolproof application in sportswear and fleece jackets.

So you can see, this is not just technique for one single application. It sounds comprehensive. Amy

So maybe it's time to join and get your feet wet. What can it hurt.
We chat about everything, maybe no one from here has joined. I kinda doubt that but you never know.

Londa gives lessons, I will ask her for you.

I haven't joined it, I have taken a class online with another website, and the thing I would want to find out about their classes is: do the instructors answer questions in a timely manner? The class I took the instructor did, and it was very helpful, since I was on a time constraint to complete it.
The nice thing I found about online classes is that you can do it at your own pace, and are not mandated by when they decide to schedule (for the most part).

Mary asked me to respond to this inquiry as one who has offered classes at Pattern Review. I do think that being a Friends of Pattern Review is a very good 'deal'. I know I have fun offering my classes periodically at Pattern Review, and feel that this is really the wave of the future as more and more independent fabrics shops focusing on garment sewing are closing.
In addition, I don't think I would have ever trudged through the designing and executing of my DDaughters' wedding gown last fall without the help of my fellow sewers on the Discusssion Boards at Pattern Review. (Creative Sewing - Wedding Gown Chronicle) probably way back in the pages though... if you want to read it!
The nice thing about it - is the same as these discussion boards, that the posts are kept so that you can refer back to them, and jump in at any time. The pattern reviews, site reviews, product reviews, etc. are also quite valuable.
I recommend Pattern Review as a sewing investment.
