The local JoAnn's store used to have a guy come in a few times a year to sharpen scissors. For some unknown reason, they have stopped this. I'm looking for another store within a reasonable driving distance that might offer the service.

In the meantime, my MIL suggested that I go to a hardware store and ask them to sharpen them. My questions:

1. Is this reliable? Are they accustomed to this type of blade, or mostly knives? I'd hate to go from dull to unusable.

2. Can you have the lightweight aluminum blades sharpened? I have a nice heavy pair of Wiss shears, but also a lightweight pair of quilting shears that are no longer much use, and I wasn't sure if they could be helped or if I should just chuck them and buy new ones.

Thanks in advance for your comments!

I tried to sharpen my fiskars with the sharpener they provide with them and found them to be worse than when i started....so i just went to hancocks and picked up a new pair of scissors....i am going to joanns this weekend to get another pair of my fiskers because hancocks does not sell them anymore....and i hate to think i will have give my ones at home to the kids to use but they are too dull to cut fabric anymore and the joann's and hancocks stopped sharpening scissors....it is a shame because i know allot of people used the service.
If you find that the hardware store does a good job and the scissors are reusable please post here and let us know.

Here in Quebec and in Ontario as well, we have Personal Edge stores. www.cdrem.com
Shops where they sell shavers and small appliances (Kitchen and personal grooming)

They do sharpening too.

Perhaps there's something in your area that's similar?

Hope this helps...

Very few hardware stores who offer this service, actually do it themselves. Most of them contract with someone locally who usually does it professionally, frequently out of their home. The store uses this to generate additional walk in traffic. Some of these people are excellent, and of course, there are some who aren't. Fortunately, there are more good than bad.

With good scissors it is worth trying. With "cheapies," you could frequently replace them for the cost of sharpening. If you have a pair of Ginghers, they're worth sending back to the company for reconditioning.

Oh, I'm usually lurking around the corner, Mary. I just have this funny idea that I shouldn't jump in unless I have something worthwhile to offer. I don't mind e-mail questions either, but won't answer unless the writer uses their real name and location.

You are such a good shoulder to lean on with machine problems. Many the time I wished I could call you up.

Scissors worth sharpening are the ones that feel "good" in you hands, don't take a lot of effort to cut, and cut the way you want them to cut. Doesn't matter if they are cheapies from the junk store.

I have just had mine sharpened by the contractor associated with the locate Knife Store [licenced specialist selling blades - knives, scissors, craft-blades, decorative swords (not real)] Did an excellent job and reasonable cost.
