I just brought home a Singer sewing machine for my wife. I think it's from the 1980's. She started using it on some pillow cases, but then the lower spool (bobbin?) ran out of thread. I figured out how to reload the spool, but we can't figure out how to reload the thread on the lower spool so that the machine will sew again. Can anyone help? :monkey:

There are many different systems. I'd need a model number to have a chance of helping.

If you slide the throat place away, the bobbin sits flat in a little compatment, and there is a little white button in the corner, you can wind the bobbin the machine. It has been decades since I've don this though. Bill can certainly help you. The bobbins they use to use were clear plastic that could be unscrewed to remove the old thread (that was one feature I loved). They also had markings on them so that you could judge how much thread was left.

I have just started working with my mom's old Singer model 347. Everything was going fine ... figured out how to thread the needle and played around with the different stitching options.

Then the bobbin ran out. I knew how to wind a new one, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to thread it! Any help would be greatly appreciated ... my daughter's curtains are waiting!

I believe the 347 has a horizontal bobbin case. If so, you hold on to the tail of the thread, and drop the bobbin in so that it will turn counter-clockwise as you pull on the thread. Then, on the rim of the bobbin case, opposite the needle, there is a slot, into which you pull the thread clockwise, holding the bobbin from turning with another finger, until you feel the thread snap into the tension. At this point, if the top is correctly threaded, you hold onto the top thread loosely a few inches behind the needle, and rotate the hand wheel toward you to manually make one stitch, until the take up arm (drawing the upper thread up) is at its top position. During this manual cycle, the upper thread will pass around the bobbin case, and when you and the take up arm pull the thread back to the top, the bobbin thread will come with it, and its path from the tension spring will be across the upper surface of the bobbin, toward the needle. Place both threads out to the rear and sew. Always remember that every time you stop your machine, intending to cut the threads, advance the hand wheel until the take up arm is at its highest point.

Find an instruction book ASAP.

Bill,

Thanks so much - I knew it had something to do with the tension slot but I just hadn't ever watched my mom closely enough. That worked perfectly. Just after posting my question, I ordered a copy of the manual - no clue where the original one is.

Bill, ( I hope you see this) there is a person needing help in how to fill the bobbin on her 9117 in the SewingWorld forum on the Singer thread. I tried to explain how I filled my old T&S but it seems my memory fails me and her machine does not seem the same and I don't know the 9117. I know you have helped others before and possibly you could help her..?? :)

I can tell you (from looking it up) that the 9117 is a wind in place bobbin, but beyond that, I probably know less about them than you do. Trying to use one of these without an IB could be very frustrating.

Bill, yes it is a wind in place bobbin. I tried to explain how my old Singer did it but apparently this one is designed a bit different. Possibly somebody can suggest where she can find a manual.

I have never answered one of these things before but I have the same question. someone just gave my young grand daughter this machine and I can't figure out how to reload the bobbin. If someone was able to help you with this could you forward the explanation to me. Thank you

http://www.sewusa.com/ has lots of threading diagrams for different machines, as well you can purchase manuals if need be.

If you know anyone that sews ask them to take a look. It's usually real easy. There is likely a little peg the bobbin fits on. Then you would turn the little knob in the big wheel so the needle doesn't go up and down, slide the little peg into place so it turns and wind the bobbin off the spool by running the machine just like you were sewing. There are probably some thread guides between the spool and the winding bobbin.

To wind this bobbin thread the machine normally. Raise the presser foot and take the thread under the presser foot back and wind it around the presser foot screw a couple of times. Open the slide plate and them reclose it until the plate contacts the stop on the upper left hand side. Run the machine until the the desired amount of thread is on the bobbin. Do not wind past the outter ring on the top of the bobbin. Press the plate stop down and close the plate the rest of the way. Insert the fabric under the foot pulling the thread to the back of the machine. It should be ready to sew.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom
