Yes, absolutely. they did it way back when they didn't have machines so you would just have to make sure your stitching is small so that it doesn't come apart.

Just take it one block at a time - you could follow the advent quilt we have on the site or use paper piecing to get a really exciting result. My first quilt was entirely hand made teeny weeny little hexagons - I wouldn't recommend something so small for a first project though! It too sooo longgg. It was then hand quilted which was very relaxing - I found I needed a frame to keep the quilt smooth whilst doing that although some people prefer not to.

I love to hand piece, it is just really time consuming but I used to feel that I had better control of what I was doing as my sewing machine and I were not very good friends........... :dave: (that is getting better........LOL). I always draw my 1/4 inch seam line on with a pencil on the back side to make sure I get it straight as my stitches seem to wander sometimes.

I think I mentioned on another thread that my sister works for a lady who lives most of the year on a boat and has no space for a machine and all the assorted quilting gear and she does beautiful hand piecing and quilting.

It amounts to if you want to do something bad enough, you can do it! To me hand piecing is the true art in quilting but boy if I had to make something to keep someone warm with it they would be waiting and shivering a long time :bluewink:

I absolutly love hand quilting. My first quilt was totally hand pieced and hand quilted. It was supposed to be large wall hanging size, but my hubby claimed it before I finished so it had to enlarged, as he is 6'2" and he wanted it to use on the sofa while watching TV. It was the broken dishes pattern as I'm sure alot of you are familiar with it was loaded with quarter square triangles. I always said I was nothing if not ambitious or maybe just crazy....
