There are a few very well known male quilters. Ricky Tims and John Flynn come to mind right away. What do you think of their quilts, and why do you think they have become so successful. Are there any other male quilters you have heard of? I think a mathematical mind helps a lot. That is one thing I do NOT have. I know a young man here in Halifax who is an astounding machine quilter. He does wonderful work. MaryW

I have only just found Ricky Timms and his stuff is amazing! What about our very own Donny on the site - he does some great work. For many of these contempory quilters I (jealously) tend to think it is the size of their stash that makes a difference - you can be so much more versatile than with my limited amount of fabric. Just think what I could do with all that stuff! Sometimes the designs thamselves are not aweinspiring but the colour choices/combinations and fabulously dyed fabics make all the difference between mediocre ans stunning! A personal view that.

I taught my Dad to sew...if he'd have lived long enough (he died at 48) I think he might have quilted...he'd have been interested anyway...he was very artistic and good with his hands...(anything his eyes could see, his hands could draw....too bad I didn't get that gene my sister did ) Good for you Charlie...! Quilting has a lot of math as well as building, like condo's, most homes now a days, bridges & etc. Reading blueprints & all that kind of work & figureing is mostly why most men can make up the patterns & figure everything out so easily. My DH doesn't quilt but he can figure it out ,make patterns that fit together so easily. I'm good at math , was my favorite subject in school but he does it so much that it's just natural to him. He finds archietcts mistakes all the time. That's not to say women can't do the same as they can & do. I can't remember the man's name that is a wonderful quilter but he designed large bridges for years. But then think of all the women way back when that weren't educated at all that made beautiful quilts. Has to be the want to do it & just being able to figure it out. Whatever it's wonderful. I'm so glad it's not a lost art. |

Thanks Jan, that was my first. I took a class at Joann's with my daughter and that was what we sewed. I really enjoyed the class. Now I want to learn more so that I can do more. Charlie |

Thank you ladies and yes I am participating in the advent blocks as well. The runner I did for my wife for christmas. She wanted it for the top of a bar we have in the family/kitchen area. She saw one when we were in Amish country and so I made it for her. Again, thanks for the kind words. Charlie |

Thanks for posting your quilting pictures. I could sit and look at quilts ALL day. I am fairly new to quilting, but I love it. As for your projects, my favorite is the table runner. Those colors would look nice in my house. Hmmmmmm. So many possibilities, so little time... What are you working on now? Did you get your house block done? Is it posted? And by the way, I envy your daughter! |

I did my house block but, I haven't posted it as yet. I am working on a quilt with six pointed stars in it. It is my own design. It will have 3 small stars across the top and bottom, 1 or maybe 2 down the sides, and a large 15 inch star block in the center. It is for my grand-daughter who will be 1 in about 2 months. Plus I am working on a swap on another board that I have to make 12 blocks of an angel for the month of August. I am also quilting one for my other GD who is 2. It is the pony quilt that was in my pics. These are keeping me pretty busy. I have signed up for a class on hand quilting even though I don't plan on doing much if any of that. Just want to know how.
