http://www.amisimms.com/index.html A very amusing quilting site I just found - the Worst quilt in the world contest is interesting - but seeing the size of other peoples stash has given me Stash-envy. She has some fab stuff she has made on there as well. love and kisses, Jan

Wow! I am on my way though. I bought some shelves for my fabric and now they are all full. Give me a few years and I am sure I will match these ladies. Gina

I was SO shocked to see the size of some of those stashes that I took a photo of mine. Remember I have only been buying fabric since October of 2003. Just a little over a year and some of it was given to me by a few quilter friends. Here is my stash: My Stash (http://community.webshots.com/photo/123420631/262872123HNaQEm) I've made five quilts, a wall hanging, two pillows, two table runners, and 6 minature wall hangings too with what I had. I hope someday to have 100 x's that. Susie northern NY

Scarey Susie, I reckon some of those women could run shops out of their stash! Yours looks very organised - I'm a carrier bag inthe bottom of the wardrobe woman...

I always had to tell my children in shops to "look with their eyes, not their hands" or in your case, your purse! We don't seem to have any shops around here that have anything worth looking at - the big fabric shop doesn't have t-shirt material or ribbing and only does 15 different patchwork fabrics, the other fabric shop has a selection of fat quarters smaller than your stash. There is another shop in Cambridge but many people don't like it because The Rudest Man In Christendom works there. It gets hard to build a stash faced with that kind of opposition. Buying on the web is kind of hard to justofy to my loving spouse when he thinks it should all be thrown away anyway. love and kisses, Jan

Jan, When it comes to fabric I 'have' to shop with my hands. All I have here is Walmart and Joann's. I do have a local quilt shop in a very small town but here prices are sky high. I have bought notions there though. Susie northern NY

Jan, I guess I'm blessed to have what I have then. I've never seen a hancocks. We have a few quilt shops about an hour from here. I've been once so far. That must be awful not having much to shop at. Susie northern NY

I'm told there are good fabrics to be had a local markets - but they are on during the week and I'm at work. Hey ho - I'm checking out some UK fabric sites and found this great fleece http://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics.php?categ=3&&fabric_type=223#dataform at a remarkably good price - DD2 is getting quite twitchy, being a cow lover and all.

Jan, Listening to you talk reminded me of when we lived in Germany. I used to call home to my dad and send him to Hancock to buy me stuff. He was always like "Don't they have fabric in Germany?" I said "Only rich people sew over here." I couldn't believe the prices for simple cotton. I guess it is like that all over Europe? I still remember my MIL bringing 10 yds of flannel in her suitcase, when they came to visit, so I could make nappies for my new baby. You need a connection who visits the US a lot. They could bring an empty suitcase and fill it with fabric for you. Gina

Jan, if you drool just over Joann's, you'd LOVE Keepsake Quilting!!! I live about an hour away, so I can scoot over any time I need to. This is one of my favorites that I just HAD to have!!! http://www.keepsakequilting.com/KQShopping/partsview.asp?action=lookup&partno=4911&subject=U6&catpos=6 Jessica photos.yahoo.com/greendragondesigns

Jessica - I'm assuming that was $64.99 for ALL 25 fatQ's! It is true enough to say that you cannot make t-shirts cheaper than you can buy them here - but the type that you make will be of a better quality - if only you could get hold of the interlock and ribbing. I heard rumours that there is a man with a van who comes to a village hall once a month who stocks these esoteric and invisible items... 1 fat Q here is about £4.99 each though you can sometimes get them cheaper. ($9.4 per fat Q) you can see why I don't enter many swaps.... love and kisses, Jan

Yes, I'm very lucky! I still have a $150 shopping spree to spend there from my DH. I'm going to get some civil war and 1930's repros for two swaps I'm in. Jan...those prices are terrible! I can see why you're frustrated over there! There probably aren't many companies over here that ship overseas, either. Hey, sewbaby has matching interlock and ribbing in lots of colors, and they ship overseas too: http://www.sewbaby.com/fabrics8.html not sure how badly you want to make your own T's!!! The fleece I bought today was £6.00 per m - the site you showed had a comparison fleece at $10.99 which converts to £5.89 per yard so not bad really! I think I would go nuts trying to think in yards again though! In theory, we converted to a decimal system in 1955 but it's still a bit hit and miss as a lot of it was voluntary. It leads to the stupidity of buying certain thing by the meter length but inches width. Most frustrating is the limited range of fabrics due to lack of competition - and specialised quilting fabrics are very highly priced. Most of my quilts therefore have been made from upholsterers fabric swatches or old dressmaking fabric - I can't justify buying loads for a quilt. So my stash is at the bottom of my wardrobe, in carrier bags. You can't really fold and stack offcuts from furniture warehouses - they come in bundles. love and kisses, Jan

After looking at these pictures, I have decided I don't have much of a "stash" at all and need more............... I will think of you all when I fabric shop as my area has several Joann's, two Hancock's, Walmarts all over the place and a local fabric store with a great stock of quilting fabric (however the prices are not so great). There are several really nice quilting shops also and I go there to dream as their prices are more than I care to invest until I develop more skilled piecing. This is nice but frustrating too because there are days when you would like to buy a lot more than the budget allows.............like a kid in a candy store who can't decide what to spend his allowance on this week. Jan, do you know anyone in the US military based over there?? If you do they can get material through the base exchange and the cost would be very reasonable. Plus the added advantage that you would not have to pay the cost of shipping to the UK. Just an idea. I was stationed in Iceland for two years and we used to do favors for our neighbors as we lived on the economy or out in town and not on base. Later we moved on base but we kept up our association with our former neighbors. Charlie |

Oh, my goodness!!! I just checked out the website address you posted. I could spend hours there just looking at their catalogue. I envy you! The next time hubby asks, "Where shall we go for holidays this summer?" I am going to say, "Center Harbor, New Hampshire!" I have a forty-five minute bus ride to get to Wal-Mart, but I must say, they are getting more and more nice fabric every season. Last week the gal in the fabric department was sweetly patient while I had her cut 24 different pieces of fabric in .25 metre (1/4 yard) lengths. So........................I'm a fan. |

M & M's Mom, my Walmart fabric department people aren't nearly as nice and helpful. I don't buy much there anyway, but sometimes I hit the $1 table for play costumes for the kids. Keepsake is quite the place, huh? I'm headed there next week to get those repros for my swaps. I could spend the whole day in there (maybe I will!). One nice thing they have is the medleys, which are great for people who find they have a hard time picking fabrics to go together. photos.yahoo.com/greendragondesigns

Sounds like we need another Sewing Room Contest. Does anyone remember our first one? It was a hoot, we asked people to take pictures and send them to us of their worst day in the sewing room. This time you have to tell us what happened on your worst day and send a pic of your space as well. This time there will be a very nice prize. Who is interested? MaryW

Not fair to do this NOW..........I have spent the last month or so trying to find the floor in there and I have.......... Everytime I arrange things in boxes by color or pattern or season and it all looks nice..........then I have to find a certain fabric and all h--- breaks loose. I have tried every way I can think of to store all those remmants that I am addicted to but so far, a stack on the bed and a mountain on the floor seems to be the best way. I keep saying there has to be a better way but I seem to work much better in chaos. (much slower too, takes time to find stuff when you just make a pile here and there). My grandchildren watch videos in there and know that they can only sit in one certain space.........the rest is Nana's toys. |
