Want to learn how to paper piece. My question is how do you get the block pattern, off of the web, to print out to the size that it should be?
I looked at a pattern and it had a square that was supposed to measure 1 inch, but it didn't, so how do you adjust so it will? Or do you just print it out then take it to a copier and enlarge it?

Trying to learn something new

Easiest way is , take it to a copier and enlarge it.. That is, unless it is something really easy, like 1/2 inch instead of 1 inch.. Then, you could just double it and it would be right..

Thanks Libby, that is what I figured. The one I saw was about 1/8in off.
I see other patterns that don't have that to measure by, so how do you really know if the patteren is the correct size to give you the block size you are wanting? Do you sew on the dotted line, then the solid line is where you cut?
Hope you know all the answers.lol Do you know of some good sites I might go to?

Okay for those that want to chase some rabbits while waiting for the Feb block try these out for free paper piecing patterns. Not all all free but most are!
Respect the copyrights and use for personal use only!

www.quilterscache.com
www.freequiltpatterns.com ( look for the ones that have PP by them)
www.mytimepatterns.com ( has a good sample block to do)
www.piecebynumber.com

These are just some I have found. I also used Alex Anderson's (from SIMPLY QUILTS) book ( Paper piecing with Alex) excellent book~ This is where I learned how to PP! She gives excellent instructions and details. Worth the $ to buy!

When you are copying patterns with a copier or scanner, can you use regular copy paper or do you have to use some special kind?

Regular copy paper works just fine with paper piecing. Just squirt with a little of water to get it to peel right off the fabric. Warning though! If you have not pre-washed your fabric don't use a lot of water or it will cause your fabric to shrink unevenly!! I just learned this!

Thanks for the tips. I do prewash all of my fabrics as soon as I get them home, to remove the formaldehyde and other finishing chemicals. I have a lung sensitivity to formaldehyde. A quick tip I heard on TV, after washing and ironing, fold fabric selvage to selvage and in half again so it is already folded for rotary cutting when you take it out of your stash.
