To date, I've never finished my seams except to ocassionally do a zigzag stitch on the raw edge of seam allowances of fabrics that ravel. But I'd like to get a more professional final look to my pieces...especially garments that will be given as gifts. And I'm not sure which types of finished seams are appropriate for what uses.

Here's my example: I'm making a sundress for my niece and would like at the very least to finish the side seams. Would a French seam be appropriate? Or is there a better technique for that area?

I have a standard machine, so serged seams are not an option.

A French seam would be quite nice!
