Hi all, I want to make a dress for my niece out of a t-shirt.The kind where you purchase a t-shirt, cut 2" off bottom and add a pleated skirt. My question is how long and wide should i cut the material for the skirt to fit a 4 yr.old? and also what kind of material would you suggest for this? Thanks for any suggestions.

I'd measure the bottom of the shirt for a basic number, decide how large I wanted the pleats, 1 1/2 inches or whatever, divide that into the width of the bottom to get the number of pleats. After you get the number of pleats, multiply that number times the depth of the pleats times two to allow for the fold. That number plus your initial width of your skirt gives you a total width. You can decide how long you want the skirt, adding in the hem and the seamline. Your pleats can either be box (pleats where both edges show) or knife (where only one edge of the pleat shows).

1. Width of t-shirt / depth of pleats =#pleats

2. # pleats x 2 X depth of pleats= (amount of extra fabric needed for inside folds of pleats)

3. Result of #1 + Result of #2= amount of fabric needed for the width of the skirt.

so if your shirt were 20 inches and you wanted 2 inch pleats, you would have 10 pleats. 10 pleats x 2 inches = 20 (2 inch pleats) x 2 =40 inches (to allow for accordian fold of pleats. So....20 inches for the skirt plus 40 inches for pleating = 60 inches wide.
