Just wondering who has done this???
Was the fabric you received what you expected??
Where can you get the best deals???

I am just a "touchy~feely" kind of gal and I like to be able to do this to the fabric I buy!!!

I recently bought some from Nancy's Notions because they were pretty batiks on sale....arrived quickly, washed up very nice and held their color. That's all I've bought on line fabric wise though. I like & prefer to touch most of the time.

I buy on line quite a bit.
EQuilter is good. They have high quality products. They aren't really cheap but not expensive either. They have branched out and have all sorts of things, not just cotton.
http://www.equilter.com/

Vogue Fabrics from Chicago is a great place for mail order or on line. They have a great swatch subscription program. All their fabrc is very high quality and the prices reflect that.
http://www.voguefabricsstore.com/

I've ordered from other places too and never had any problems.

Usually you get what you pay for so if you want high quality you expect to pay more. The thing is that, for most of us, finding quality fabric is a challenge. The chain stores offer a very limited selection.
The Threads site has a list of links to their advertisers and there are all kinds of wonderful choices there.
Many places will send swatches if you ask.

I have bought online a few times.

For kids fabrics, flannel, etc. I buy from www.wazoodle.com
I also got a nice piece of linen and some knit from her for myself. Good service and prices.

For my own fabrics, I buy from www.timmelfabrics.com for linens, cottons, knits and stretchy denims, etc. Good prices and service as well. These are Canadian companies.

I would love to order from equilter and keepsake quilting but by the time I pay for postage, duty, change in the $$$, it is quite expensive.

I can't even find a half decent :Canada: button place online.

I used to purchase a lot from Fabric.com (http://store.yahoo.com/phoenixtextiles/) when we lived in Germany. I have gotten some fabric that was different than what I expected (color, texture) but the quality has always been good. I think my problem with texture is that I am not very knowledgable about the different types of fabric. The texture was probably right on for the type of fabric it was.

I am here in the middle of the textile south so I don't see many fabrics that I cannot find locally, but I have ordered from Wazoodle on Mary's recomendation and been well pleased at what I received..Quick service and good prices and very unusual print fabric.. Nobody around here has the same as what I ordered..

Hi MyGirlFriday, love the frog!
I've ordered from fabric.com (www.fabric.com) fashionfabrics.com (www.fashionfabrics.com) and fabricmart.com (www.fabricmart.com) .
I've been most pleased with the latter two, as I receive swatches.
I also prefer to know where the fabric was made before I buy and sometimes they list the origin.

The one place I have order fabric from was Keepsake Quilting. I did this many years ago with just their catalog they sent my mom. I have a terrible time putting fabric together for a quilt, (just awful) and they had something I liked so I ordered the fabrics. Since then I have used their online ordering and I have always been very pleased. I have ordered from a site that Martha Pullen recommended for some heirloom fabric. Now that was very expensive, but I needed it and could not get to the store in Michigan that carried the fabric. Of course it was the highest quality but it was also over 20 dollars a yard. It was wonderful fabric, and I could tell the difference the moment I started working with it. I am going to look through the other sites everyone has mentioned, to see what is on there. I work for a fabric store and I am dissapointed on many of our "quality" fabrics.

Chrys, love the sites you gave for us to look at. One group of fabrics I thought was great was the Camlot series. My younger sister is a nut about those time and I think she would love a quilt made out of that. Just don't know what kind of pattern would be good for it. Have to start looking to see if I can find one. Thanks again, those site were great.

my favourite online places are timmelfabrics.com, wazoodle.com (love the yard sales!) and ebay, of course with ebay you take what you get. I've ordered from Nancy's notions but not for a long time now.

One thing I forgot to mention to all of you who don't live in this part of the country.. MaryJosClothStore is the best place in the world to buy fabric.. She has a huge mail order business.. I am lucky, she is only 20 miles down the interstate from me..She has almost anything in the world in her store.. and reasonable prices also..

Here is the scoop on Maryjos.. They have a website, but do not display fabrics online.. She has an 800 number.. They do a tremendous mail order business.. You can get sample swatches in the mail.. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but by not having an online store with miles of internet space, she keeps her prices down.. Plus, you can find just about anything in the world here.. 3 years ago , when my niece was getting married, my sister bought Eyelet Embroidered sparkle organza there for her 'Mother of the Bride outfit' and we made a Jacket that was the most gorgeous garment I ever had a hand in creating..Plus a long skirt and shell from a matte finish satin of some kind.. She was the best dressed Mother of the Bride I've seen in a long time.. www.Maryjos.com is how you can find the website to get the phone number... I think it is 1-800-Maryjos but I'm not sure..Busloads come into the Gaston Mall parking lot and unload at MaryJos every time there is a large gathering of women anywhere in the area..

I have ordered from Fabrics.com on a few occasions and have always been satisfied with the quality of their fabric and their customer service. I just placed my first order from www.craftconn.com and am hopeful about the outcome. Also, try www.roxanesheirlooms.com . I actually take lessons from her so can vouch for the quality of her goods and her stellar customer service.

I do alot of shopping online and always look at return policies before placing an order. If I am EVER unsure about an online store I give them a call... if I can't get someone on the phone or my call isn't returned within 2 business days I generally don't do business with them. There is also always the security of knowing that my cc transaction can be cancelled if I don;t receive or the goods are misrepresented. AND we use the virtual account number feature of one of our cc's for all of our online purchases... it generates a unique number for one-time use... perfect to prevent card number stealing from online transmissions!

Good luck! There are some wonderful things out there!

Cheers-
Julie

I also have bought from Keepsake Quilting . I tend to browse the catalog and then order online. I also like Connecting Threads . I have also bought from eBay, Joann.com , and Fabric.com. The 50% sales at Joann.com are great for stocking up.

Be careful when you go to maryjos.com. I clicked on the link and it was an ok place. The problem with the site is it puts several spyware things on you puter. My husband tried to do a defrag, yesterday and the system told him that there were problems, with the hard drive. Then it locked the system up. He did a scandisk and the report showed several things put on by Maryjos.com. He ran the spywares program and it detected the problems and got rid of them. He's the computer person in the family. He says that alot of sites plant these things. They track your travels around the web. And, as it did with our system, mess it up. If you don't have a spyware detecter, let me know and I'll have him post, where you can down load one. They are a free program.
Just something to think about.

I have bought some fabric and sewing patterns on ebay recently, Fabric Connection was the name of the store I liked the best. They sent me swatches of a whole bunch of their fabrics and their shipping prices are very good (especially since I am in Canada). Whenever I order from the U.S. I have to keep each purchase to about $15 ($20 Cdn) or else I get charged "duty" and makes the whole savings not worth it. I will have to check out the sites you have all mentioned here.

Yes I am very guilty of buying fabric online, but only through Joann.com. Only once has a fabric not been what I expected-last year I purchased an 8-yrd bolt of, what I thought was, 100% cotton Jingle fabric. It turns out the fabric was 100% cotton-Flannel!! Oh well, there's lots of Christmas blankets being made this year. However I am very cautious about fabrics I buy online-it has to be 100% cotton since I'm leary of other types at this point.

Now about spyware--there is a free spyware detector you can download. It's called Spybot, and it works great. Use a Google search to find the website as I can't remember the name of it. Running Spybot once a week or so will keep your computer spyware free and you can also get updates for it too.

Hope this helps! :bg:

Just want to add my positive feedback on Wazoodle (http://www.wazoodle.com/). Great fabrics. Canadian post is horridly inconsistent so order well ahead of when you need it. I live close-ish to BC and have occasionally had it delievered to a friend's mum up there, to save $$. But for me - living in a small town where I can't find good knits - I am not so much interested in saving money, but getting great fabrics. I have loved everything I have received there.

I think it is very hard to know the color and hand you are getting online. I only buy 100% cotton knits and usually by the time I get them I am happy with them, even if they aren't the exact color or drape I was hoping for.

I have also heard good things about Main Street By Mail (http://www.mainstreetbymail.com/) and bought their swatch book last month, which at $4 is a good investment, methinks. The prices per yard are good.

Jenny-0, I live in Abbotsford and do alot of US shopping because I have it sent to a little shipping company in Sumas WA that charges $3US per parcel, and as long as its less than $50CDN I just scoot back over the border, no questions asked, no duty paid. And if it happens to be over $50 and less than $100 CDN, I take hubby with me (2 people x $50 each). I don't know exactly where you are in Vancouver area, but if you are close to the border, this may be an option for you, even if you used Bellingham or Blaine. I get terrific service and can order way more stuff than if I use a Canadian address!!!

Bridesmom, yes that's great you can do that. I know of others that do the same thing for all kinds of stuff. I live right in the middle of Vancouver so it is quite a bit of a drive, especially with two kids. Maybe when they are both in school and I'm making loads of money (hee hee) sewing it would be worth my while to open an account down there.

I checked out wazoodle webiste quickly and was pleasantly surprised at the prices. I need to make some diaper covers asap so I think I will try them out.

There is a great fabric store I try to visit in person, but they also have a website. Their fabric is all great and they are very helpful if you are looking for a specific fabric that you "just didn't get quite enough of". Ask me how I know.
Anyhow the store is

I've had to buy online for years because we live too far away (four hour drive) from the nearest fabric store. I've been very pleased with the service and quality of fabric I have ordered. I like Fabric.com, equilter, Fabricgalore.com, Thousandsofbolts.com, Idealfabrics.com, Denverfabrics.com, and tons of others. I especially like the sites that tell you where you can go online to look for a certain fabric. I make soft cloth dolls and I use the sites that specialize in trims, laces, beading, and fancy threads (embellishments). Joggles.com and Sunshinecrafts.com have a great supply of all kinds of things.
