This is probably an idea that quilters would like more than non-quilters...

Match A Charm
1. Each person in the group (thinking 6-8 people per group, depending on number who sign up) cuts a 6" square out of a focus fabric of their choice.
2. Put a label on the square with your name, address and email. Then put the square in a baggie.
3. Send the square to the next person below you on the list. The last person on the list would send to the person at the top.
4. When you receive the original square, find a coordinating FQ to go with it, put a label on it with your name (so the person knows who sent what, put in the baggie (or a larger one if needed) and send the square and FQ (please use a good quality fabric) along to the next person. (FQ's can be found in your own stash or you can purchase, that is up to you). The fq's need not be washed, but should be labelled either way.
5. The squishies will continue through the list, each person adding a coordinating FQ to the packet.
6. When the owner receives the squishie, they will have a group of FQs numbering one less than the number of people in the group.
7. Please remember this is a committment. Try to turn the squishie around and mail it to the next person promptly. Keep communication open... let each other know when squishies are being mailed and received by posting on the thread.

So....what do you think? Any interest? And, more importantly, what would be a good start date?

I have done this with a group while living in Ontario.. and WOW it was fun and the results were great...

We sent a 12" block so that if there was a pattern on your focus it could relate many colors...

So if I understand this correctly, if there are 8 people in your group, you would cut the square, send to person # 2 who would choose a fat quarter and send to person # 3, etc so in the end you have your square plus 7 fat quarters? Haven't done a swap like this before so just trying to be sure I understand. Thanks.

Shari,
You always have such creative ideas!
I am having a brain fart on this one right now. We each send a square to person #2 and then it goes all through the list, each person adding a FQ, right? Do we go one at a time, or do we all send out our squares at once ? I love the idea but this sounds like a killer in postage. I always trust your judgement, so you probably have to spell it out for me though. I am in a Fibromyalgia flare, so my head is full of cobwebs lol.

This is interesting ... I have never heard of it done this way ... I am trying to figure out how this work ...

Each person in a group have their own square they would like to create a blanket or whatever ... then they send it to the next person on the list ... that person will find a coordinating fabric or whatever fabric they think would look good with it, etc.... then I wait for someone above me on the list to send me a fabric and then I look for in my stash or buy to coordinate theirs?

How many squares do we do this and what is a squishie? Sorry - new to this.

Thanks!

yup, you guys have it right! There is a list of participants, say 6 people total. If I'm person number 3, I would pick out a 12" square of a focus fabric then send it on to the next person on the list. Once received, they will find a coordinating fat quarter to go with the square, then send it on to the next person. By the time your 12" square reaches you again, it will be accompanied by 5 coordinating fat quarters! If you use the smallest possible envelopes as it progresses, the mailing doesn't get too bad. You all mail at the same time, but you're never overwhelmed with more than one at a time, as you do a quick turnaround (not more than a few days preferably). It's great for stash busting!

Oh, and a squishie is an envelope filled with fabric!

Okay I am getting it now ...

So if we have 10 people ... I will have 10 blocks/FQ however it is set up and I will get 9 other people their fabric "matching" or coordinating with their choice of pick? Sounds cool ... does it go around the block once or twice?

What kind focus fabric would most people start with ... do you usually have a theme say like breast cancer or Winnie the Pooh or kids' trains, etc (just throwing out some ideas)?

And this mailing thing ... I am trying to picture how this works ..... you only mail out once or do you mail out 10 times (differnet people ... I don't get how this part works) ....

I am asking all these questions, because, I am interested and I want to make sure I get this before jumping in and screwing up because I did not get it and such.

TIA

goes around the list just once

any kind of focus fabric - can be a novelty like a train or cat or could be a floral or even (GASP) a tone on tone - depends how hard you want to make it for your listmates!

mailing - you'd end up mailing as many envelopes as there are people in your group b/c you mail each package on to the next person on the list after you've added your fat quarter.

I think I am interested or jumpin' in ... please keep me posted.

I am thinking about the fabric size ... 12 inch blocks sounds good ... but I am wondering if people would prefer a fat quarter so that they have more "fabric" to play (and cut up smaller sizes) with as there are many quilts that can be made with fat quarters using the main block as a theme to play with it - just an idea.

BRG,
If I am reading this correctly, you would send a 12" square of fabric,(while keeping the rest of the Fat quarter/half yard/yard of focus fabric). Each person on the list would then add a Fat Quarter that coordinates with your square. When it returns to you, there would be your 12" square and XXX number of coordinating Fat Quarters. I think that is what they are saying. I have never participated in these FQ swaps, so I can't be sure I have it right. I don't quilt but since doing some of the other swaps I seem to be reading the posts on all the rest. And on the Pattern Swap I got a pattern for a totebag that uses FQ's so I am getting interested in these.

You asked when would be a good start date ... maybe let's see how many people "signed" up ... and then we can determine from there?

Should we send you a PM indicating our interest and jumpin' in on this?

As I have mentioned, I have done this and we had a GREAT time... I made a lap quilt with the 8 FQs that came into my mail box for the one swap..

I recall doing a swap like this again where I made a "farm" type runner from a friend. It is much fun.. So postcardgirl.. when ever you are ready.. I will join in

Me too, me too, I wanna play too!

Actually I think a fat quarter would be the most practical-or 12"--but I will go with the flow-just tell me what I need to do!!
