When all the kids were living at home, I would go to yell for one of them and start calling Su Be Da. No matter which one I wanted I had to say that. It is the first two letters of each kids name. I still do it, if I am talking to Dave I will start to call him Jordan, so it is JorDa. It makes me sooooo frustrated and the kids all tease me about it. I even do it when I am talking to them on the phone. Now my son tells me, Ma, pick a name and stick with it.

Sometimes I could wring his neck.

It could be worse! Their names could all sound the same, so even if you yelled the right one, all the kids would come, or none of them. My ex and his brother and sister were Freddy, Betty and Eddie.

I have always called Amy Amber and Amber Amy and they resent it -- especially Amy. But lately I have taken to calling them Lucy or calling Lucy Amy or Amber. They really resent that since Lucy is the dog.
Lucy doesn't seem to mind as long as I have a treat in my hand when I do it.

I worked with a woman once. Her name was Jimmie (yep...NOT a nick name), her 3 brothers were all named Jimmy. (yep...it's true). I guess the poor woman either couldn't come up with different names, or couldn't be bothered to...
I guess it's no worse than George Formans 4 boys all named after him. (different mothers)Confusing though...

My mother-in-law always calls her 3 boys by the others names, they just correct her and go on...

My mothers aunts and uncles INSISTED that I be called Kathleen, even though it's NOT my name. They never stopped it either. Even though I never answered to it and no one could make them stop.

Families can be funny about names... :whacky:

My dad was bad at this also. I was his only girl and he always called me Mary Jean after his favorite sis. Now that we are older my favorite bro does the same to his daughter and me. She is Tia and he calls me Sue, (when he gets it right LOL) but usually he calls me Tia........Sue so Tia and I have started calling each other by his names. I am Tia Sue and she is Sue Tia!!!
I also do the same with my DDs, Kim and Amy. And they too eventually became Kesha, thanks to the dog. But usually it is just Kamy. Hehehe

Good Morning all, Thank you all for the smiles ,I really needed that. I have done the same thing to my kids and grandkids. They all get so frustrated with me. I'm beginning to think of it as a way just to get their attention when they know they were intending on ignoring us. It could be worse , we could call them a name they have never heard of in a language they did know.==Boy would that get their attention. :bg: :bolt: You all have a great day now ya hear

I use to get upset with my Mother about the things she use to do like call me by my sisters name and other things but you know I'm doing to the same thing with my kids and they are calling me on it now too. I guess we all soon or later really do become our Mothers' after all. :re:

I can't remember my new grandbaby Paige's name, I want to call her by her middle name Arlene. Her maturnal Grandmother Arlene died when Beth, my DIL was 2 yrs old and for some reason I want to call her Arlene. Beth brought me four of her blankets last night and got me to embroidery her name in hugh letters on those blankets. I guess she's trying to give me a hint to call her by the right name.

My mom would go through the list of seven also. She always ended with "YOU KNOW WHICH ONE YOU ARE GET IN HERE!"
I do it too. I always mix the kids and the dog up. The kids just take it in stride.

I've been reading all the post & cracking up. Glad Others are doing what my Mom did & I still do. My son Lance just answered to the dogs name "Rags " & the dog came if I called for Lance. The girls would get upset over the mixed up names. Now I do the same thing with the grandkids. I think it's just a Mom thing as we're so busy with so much on our mind. I think I was worse at it when they were all 4 teenagers at the same time. My dh didn't answer the phone for years. He said it couldn't be for him as the kids kept it tied up & no one could get through for him.

I was the youngest of three girls (the 5 boys don't count in this story) and I used to tell my dad that when I was growing up I always thought I had 4 names because if he wanted me he went from my mom down the line to me and would yell out "EdithPearlBetteViolet" and all blended into one long name.
Now I feel bad because my Granddaughter Kadri is so much like my youngest dtr Barbi (her aunt) that I, and all the others, call them by the wrong name all the time, especially if they are both visiting at the same time. They both find it very annoying.

I was walking by a long window outside my office in the hallway the other day and caught a look at my reflection -- I almost lost my breath -- For an instand I felt like I was looking at my mother. I have always sworn I would never be like my mother but I guess it's an inevitable fact . My husband even teasingly calls me by my mother's name every now and then. It's gets scarier as we get older doesn't it girls? My dog and my husband both look at me sometimes like "who are you talking to and what are you talking about?"

My Mother bless her heart would stand right in the way when you were trying to do something thinking she was helping. So now my husband calls me by her name when I do something that irritates him. I have a good come back for him, I tell him that's a compliment. He loved her and she loved him so when I tell him that it shuts him up quick. She was a saint and very loving person so I hope I can one day be more like her. God knows I look just like her and talk like she did. It is scary because of all my siblings I was the closest to her in spirt and physically.

Weird, when I cough I sound like my Mum. It surprises me every time. I don't look like her - I look like she would have looked if she'd had a happier life. It is amazing how much liviing under constant disaproval can destroy a person. I am a grateful woman for my own situation.

My sons' names are J-Sam and S-John. They didn't used to have two capital letters, but when I want one I never fail to start to call the other. My mom was very blessed to have an only child for 11 years [me] so she always got the name right. She had a sister, so they were always PJane and JPat. I've resorted to just calling them "honey" when I draw a complete blank. :bg:

Patsy,
I can really relate to "becoming my mother". All my life I've heard "Cindy, look at your mother and you will know what you will look like when you are her age." I swear it would infuriate me but it is so true. Now my DD is hearing the same thing. When people see all three of us together, they are amazed at how much we look a like. Plus all three of us sound a like. It certainly is a disadvantage since we all three act a like also. Never a dull moment around here. :)
Hugz,

when my gran was alive it used to irritate the dickens out of her because my mom, I, and my dd all have names that end in "a". she could never keep our names straight and so would go through all 3; norma, ramona, erika... and finally resort to the "you know which one I mean" line... luckily. my dogs names are "luci" and "csibesz" so they don't get involved in the confusion...

Just made a BAD mistake - called present DD2 boyfriend by previous boyfriends' name in conversation. (Talking to daughter - boyfriend not present) had to slap myself around the face 3 times to make up for it. His is a bad name as he cheated on her, with another guy, while drunk, in a pub....
Blokes being being gay or bi doesn't bother her, but snogging someone else when your are not single - woah Cardinal Sin! I have to agree with her!

I have the problem that the ex wives (notice I said that in plural) are all still friends with me. Amagine that atmosphere around here especially at Christmas time when the ex's mates come with them with their children in tow from that marriage. I just smile and hand out gifts. They all get them even the ex's new spouses. I know I'm nuts!!!!! What can I say.

hi I'm new here but after reading about the name mix ups it reminded me of what my mom did all the time. there are nine of us kids, and mom had the bright idea to name us all using the first letter J. ...jerry, johnny, joey, jacky, juny, jay, jolly, jenny, jimmy. When we would get in trouble mom would start out with....ju,jo,jen,jim......then just finish by saying....ok all of you in here now! it was always funny (not to mom)
but i did win a tongue twister contest (state wide) in the 3 grade by using my brothers and sisters names.

i love this site.

Wow! Can I relate but when my kids were all at home I always went through all 3 names plus the names of all the animals in the house and then it was "whoever you are". It doesn't get any better either! My DS is Jason and my DGS is Justin so we now have JasJustin and JustJason! And I never ever get the right name even when I stop to think about it because it always comes out wrong and half the time I don't even realize I'm saying it!!! I think the kids have given up on me!! Ditto Pudge99. I say the exact same thing...How about when you name 3 of your sons with R's....Ray, Ron and Rob..... Begging for trouble with the names.
But then again I called all the children, all 7 and still do, by what ever name comes out. And yes they DO know who I am talking about! They better answer me, it's there job to know.... :dave:

I certainly did that with mine! When Lisa was two, three, and four she never said Mark--or Lee; it was always MarkandLee, whichever one she wanted, she called them both the same, with both names. When she was four she asked me, "Is one of them Mark and one of them Lee?" I told her yes and she said, "well, you always call them both and when I was little (at four!) I thought MarkandLee was all one name and they both had it, and I wondered if Shaun'andLisa was one name too...and now we have JonJay, but they're just babies." She also is the one who found Grandmother hard to say, so at two she told my mother, "I'm going to call you Honey now; G----- is too hard to say." Her version of Grandmother was unpronounceable! My grandchildren call me Nonna, Italian for Grandmama...and easy to say! MariLynntx
