I volunteered to sew some costumes for the school musical. This is a middle school, grade 6-8. They asked me to make two plain shift dresses for little girls. I said no problem. They said there was bias binding for armhole edges and velcro opening in the back for a quick change. How much simpler could it be?

A couple of days later the teacher arrived with the pattern and fabric. Two little shifts size 5-6.

The pattern asked for taffeta, cotton or like wovens for the dress. What they gave me was two pieces of stretchy knit with some sort of sparkles. These were glued on. Hmm. They brought thread and pins from the dollar store. I never opened them. School budgets ya know.

She insisted on the cotton bias for the armholes. So.................I sewed up the stretchy knit dresses. The ballpoint needle went thru the sparkles ok, just a little clunking. Then I applied the bias tape to one dress, not enough for the other. The other dress has one color bias around the neck and I made some bias from a fabric I had for the armholes. Closer in color than the bias they brought me.

Thankfully I pressed to the inside and stitched it down so it's not visible. It just goes to show you what you can end up doing when someone else buys the fabric and notions. :re: My machine needle will go in the garbage after going thru all those little sparkly dots. WalMart fabric I think.

Mary, last year I made two tuxedo coats with tails out of a medium weight knit jersey with tons of glitter glued on for the two school drum majors. I found glitter everywhere afterwards. I brushed, cleaned and blew it out everywhere but I couldn't seem to get it all out of my machine. I finally ended up having it professionally cleaned. (By the way, that fabric was $17.95 a yard and came from an exclusive bridal fabric shop in town.) That was a case of volunteering that cost me $50.

They can put a man on the moon, they invented appliances that can do just about anything you want them to do, but they can't make a high end sewing machine that can be cleaned without bringing it in to the dealer and costing a small fortune. I clean my machine every 100000 stitches but it's always full of lint as much as I can get out and I bet there is more where I can't see. It's having to go in soon for the first check up. (it's only 2 months old) I love these counters on the Singer XL6000, takes all the guessing out of where are are in wear and tear.

How was the school musical Mary? What we won't do for our Grands. I'm off this morning to WalMart to get my second oldest Granddaughter her first sewing machine. She's so lucky to have a MawMaw who is encouraging her creative talents. :bg: I have another one in May to get then I'll have to wait until Paige and the newest one Trinatte grows up before I have to buy any more. Gheese, I had all boys this girl thing is beginning to get to me. They are high maintainence aren't they?

hey suze.. you think they're high maintenance now?? LOL wait til prom dresses, homecoming dresses, snowball dresses, etc. etc.,etc!!! and once they get into make-up...look out!! :re: When my dd got to the age where she wanted to wear make-up, I thought I would do a good thing and took her to the Clinique counter at the local Kauffman's so she could learn, not only about age appropriate make-up but also about skin care... nowadays, I don't even want to know what she spends on skin care and make-up... :re: I definitely created a monster... :bang: boys are much cheaper!! :bg:

just my 2 cents...

When a dear neighbors husband passed away she decided to get involved with the seniors dance group. She being in her 70's thought it would be a good thing to do to keep in shape. I of course was there to encourage her and watched her practice. I of course told her I would help in any way, no questions asked. One night she comes and asks me if I would 'mind' making vests for her group, since they were performing in a month. I of course could not say no, so I said lets do it. Now I took her and a couple of the ladies to JoAnne's to pick out the fabric and pattern. I thought that would be the good thing so I could steer them in the right direction. How foolish I was to think it would be an easy fabric. They had to sparkle and shine so of course we did the confetti dot. What could I say but okay and off I went to sew 12 vest. They came out nice but I do not wish to use that material again and the ladies did sparkle and shine.

Ladies, I can relate....a couple of years ago a friend I hadn't seen in a while asked me to go out for Chinese food. While at the restaurant, she asked me if I knew how to put in a zipper. That progressed into her saying maybe I could "help" her make her 15 year old daughter a costume for school. Well this costume had me working two week-ends straight and evenings in between. I didn't have sequins as it was an early settlers costume but I had to make the skirt and fitted vest out of upholestry fabric. The woman at the fabric store had sold them a size 18 pattern and the daughter was definitely not size 18 - maybe a 12 or 14. I guess trying to help, they had pre-cut all the pattern pieces using the size 18 markings before they brought it over. I had to recut as I sewed. I even had to go to her place to do a fitting when the blouse and vest wasn't tight enough for the daughter. Then I had to take everything in.

When my friend left, she did say thank-you and she added that she would never have been able to do it by herself. But I know that the next time someone asks me if I know how to sew something...the answer will be "NO not really".

Hey you guys get better guidance then I do I get we need turtles, lobsters, seahorses, starfish, fish, killer whales, submarines, Jellyfish, scuba divers, mermaids, hula girls, surfers. In three weeks. Between 5 and 10 of each. Order what you need but don't spend to much money.

Then I have a nervous break down and say how in the world do you make seahorses that 3 year olds can skate in.

............and I was just thrilled when the Ninja Turtle's craze died down a bit. I had like 8 (mixed with brides' maids, square dance dresses, my own kid's costumes) of these the Halloween that my dad became ill and died...but I was lucky.....I had patterns to follow.
