Well Grandma left us and I have received her industrial singer 241-11 and a union seger. I don't know if I will ever use the seger but I would like to learn how to use the singer. I have not touched a sewing machine for over twenty years. I need to find out how to get the thread from the spool to the needle. I have tried to set it but have not got it right yet. On the tension wheel does the thread slide between the wheels or set on the outside in the grove?

Thank you for any help

If it is not to late you should get together with the executer of Grandma's will and find out if it would be possible to look for the instruction manual at her house. Or if you got the machines and someone else got the patterns and such you could ask them if they got the manual.
I googled your machine and didn't find a whole lot about it so it might be difficult to get a new manual for it.

Thanks Gina:
There isn't a maunual. Grandma worked in a mens shirt factory for fortyfour years. She retired twenty some years ago and knew these machines inside and out. When she sat down on the singer her hands where so fast it was like a blur. I too googled with little results. These singer where built in the fortys.

Thank you again

I found a picture here. http://www.snapfastener.com/ShopTools/ Scroll down. Is this the machine you have? If so it looks like the thread should go between the tension disks. I am not a professional but I have sewn on Singers for many years and all the ones I have seen the thread goes between the disks. Are you sure you have it threaded right everywhere else?

Thanks Gina:

Yes that is the machine. I have played with the tension long enough to figure out how to get the same tension as the bobbin. I'm assuming the thread rides on the shaft between the disks, and I have the thread running ever place it should.
The top thread loops on the down side of the material are real lose and after about an inch the needle sheers the thread off. So don't know. I live out from town and you can't just pick that thing up and take it to the local sewing shop.
I'll get it some day, I never give up easy. Looking forward to sewing my bike cover, bbq, awnings etc.

As always thank you

So the needle thread is breaking? Sounds like your tension is too tight or maybe you are using old thread. Also sometimes if you don't have the same thread in your bobbin as you have on the spool it will cause these things to happen. I really think you should talk to a repairman and see if they might make a house call if it is so difficult to get the machine to them. It can't hurt to ask them.

How old is this singer?? my Featherweight Portable has to have the needle inserted with the flat side to the side , not the back like modern machines.. Maybe this could be the problem.. I am only guessing though..

Thank you Gina and Libby!!

Libby the needle on the beast is round, no flat side. Gina I'm pretty remote, and the only place that works on sewing machines is an hours drive. I ordered a manual from singer. It's for a 241, and mine is a 241-11 hope it helps. The odds are greater that I'l get the thing working and not use it much then not get it working at all. I work in the tv production biz and the prices for simple cordura bags/cases, scrims and flags are out of this world. And some of the stuff is poorly designed and built. I have over the years looked at some of this equipment and thought if I had a heavey duty sewing machine then I could come up with a better idea. Anyways again and always thank you both!!

Take care

dan

p.s

Libby this singer is a 1947 241-11
