I am a Canadian living in the USA. I cannot cannot cannot imagine not being able to go to Joann's whenever (if I moved back to Canada I would seriously go through a withdrawal). Fabricland is okay but sparsely around.

I think Joann's should spread up to Canada or at least provide shipping up there!!! That isn't right!

While I appreciate those Canadians who have shopped at Joanns, which I have, I would like to see a whole new Canadian company be established! Sorry American's but we have lots of talent and ideas here and some unique things that I am sure would fill a store like Joanns. There are also lots of little shops making contributions on their own.

Here in Prince George, Fanny's Fabrics is going out of business and fortunately Fabricland appears to be going to fill the holes, but some of the chain stores don't carry the quality fabrics that independant stores do. I found that to be true at Joanns. There are great mailorder shops in Canada that one can get almost everything one wants. I find A Great Notion has most things Nancy's Notions has and more! There are several shops in Alberta that I order from all the time. One of the advantages of the internet is one can find almost anything one wants!

Sanchin - I agree with you wholeheartedly - I wish Canada would have more quilting stores ... but, I haven't shopped for quilting stores and I am planning a quick weekender with my (will be) 2 year old girl to visit my dad for Father's Day weekend in June - I am hoping to see if I could jump in at least ONE quilting store and maybe one Fabricland ... I also am going to try to look for Canadian fabric for Canada Day ---- I need need need some Canadian motifs or themes at my house - I have strong Canadian pride and I wanna show it through blankets and quilts!!! :)

I agree with you girls wholeheartedly. I wish we had more quilting shops. Here in Halifax, there is one.

BRG - Before you come to Canada type go online and type in the name of the city/community you are coming to. The chamber of commerce usually has a web site that tells you the name of the businesses in town. Also Google "Fabric+... name of town" - some stores have web sites but don't belong to a chamber of commerce ($). Also try ShoppingCanada.com.

I have always (once didn't) found that sales clerks and owners in fabric and sewing stores are more than willing to tell you of other related retail stores in their area. It is good sales practice as everyone can't carry everything and what one does for others, others will do for them.

Further, here in Canada a lot of stores are located 'out of town' in people's homes. I have found a few real gems just by checking phone books.

Now - how do I insert smilies into these mails.

PS Fabricland used to carry several Canadian flag material

Believe it or not, I think it was last year that my sister-in-law bought fabric with Canadian flags at Walmart in Sherbrooke Qué. She used it to make a quilt for my brother and gave it to him for his birthday - July 1st. She even machine quilted maple leafs all around the outside border. I was amazed as she quilted it without a walking foot and the leaves were not done via free motion quilting. She did say that she would never do another one like it as it was quite a challenge.

Sancin,
It's nice to see someone closer to home. I live 3hrs west of you. I go into P.G. about twice or three times a yr. Fanny's was getting out of cotton for a while and it's too bad that they are closing now. The last time I was at Fabricland I noticed they were expanding in their fabrics. Hope to go thru in June. Is Fanny's having any kind of closing sale? Might be worth it to make a trip out there sooner.

Thanks! Will keep that in mind.

I went to a small town Fabricland which was the closest to me (probably a mistake as they didn't have what I wanted) - outside of Winnipeg ... I am from the Twin Cities ... I think next time, I should check out Winnipeg or Thunder Bay. When I went to Fabricland it was in June - should be the time when they start selling the Canadian theme fabric - I was so upset when they didn't -at the time, we didn't have time to go to Winnipeg.

Just to let everyone know, I ordered from www.equilter.com and it arrived within a week. From Colorado to Nova Scotia is quite a ways, the delivery was $8.95 US. which I think is expensive but I would not have gotten what I wanted otherwise. Very nice fabric too.

Fanny's has had some phenomenal sales - everything 50 - 70% off but pretty picked over by now as I believe they close this week. Rumor has it that they are looking for new retail space and may open again. Fabricland just got in their new spring fabrics and have wonderful quilting fabric. It may be worth a trip and stop at Kathy's on the way into town!
