I talked to my business counselor the other day, he seemed to think that memory quilts [with photos] would sell well in our area. I was planning on selling embroidery designs, but we don't think I could come up with enough income doing just that. I've been researching online and there are a number of sites where people sell these, and get quite good prices for them. Don't know if they actually sell any though, lol. So, if you make quilts to sell, do you target a specific market, and how do you reach them? I'm tossing around all kinds of ideas, not sure how worthless they are. Thanks, any help would be appreciated! Allie "onward through the fog"

I'd like to sell memory quilts in my local area for profit. I've made quite a few memory quilts with pictures on them using the Bubble Jet Solution & Rinse. I've been very happy with them. I've made mostly lap & crib size ones. I'd like to specialize in "Baby's 1st yr" quilts. I've made them for my relatives. I am also trying to figure out prices, as the ink for the printer is probably the most pricey part! I've had a few people tell me that they would be interested in buying them, thinking maybe $90 (???) I do worry about copyrights on the pictures & reproducing them. I wouldn't accept any prof. pics. |

Ooh, I didn't think about professional photos - no, I wouldn't use those either. I think $90 sounds pretty low - go to www.dogpile.com and type in memory quilts for sale, and check out what people are charing. Some of them seem a little steep for my area, but I really want to break into the market on the ritzy side of town, lol. Can that Bubble stuff be washed, will it come out? I haven't had any problem with the Bubble Jet. I use the Bubble Jet solution, then the Bubble Jet rinse. My mom has washed her quilt I made her about 3 times with reg. detergent & hasn't had any problem. Of course, I do think the more it's washed over time, it will fade a little. Wow, those prices on Dogpile are pricey! I'd like to sell the crib size for about $120 & the lap size for about $150. That's what I'm thinking, but I don't know if it will fly around here (Dayton, OH ). Everyone I've shown them to goes crazy wanting to know everything about them & wants to know if I will make & sell them. But, I haven't said any prices yet, so who knows? I also do some embroidery on them. If you are a member of Sewforum. com, I've got a couple of pics posted there under "Show off your projects" under "memory quilt" date 1/19/05. I got my Bubble Jet from Nancy's Notions. Bought about 3 & rinse at the same time when they had a free shipping over $25 special. It's a little work to cut out & use the freezer paper, but I like doing it & using my 3 in 1 printer/scanner. |

That price sounds a little better, lol. You need to get what you're worth, and if you add embroidery, that takes it up a notch. I'll be doing embroidery on mine too. Another thing I wanted to offer was children's quilts, done with their artwork - scanned onto fabric. I think those would sell well also. I went to where your quilts were posted, just DARLING and I LOVE the WWII one. Very nice! Allie "onward through the fog"

Pricing of course will be decided upon size, photo sheets, your time, fabric, etc. I just finished a memory nursery school quilt for my grandson. There is a photo in my album, it is mostly of his coloring, painting etc. The center block is the picture beside the quilt of his little grad cap and gown lol. I did put his little certificate, his class photo and surrounded it with 123 and abc fabric. These are alot of work so don't sell yourself short with the cost. |

That Joshua is a lucky little boy! That memory quilt is darling! I love the baseball one, too! Now, after all this talk of children's drawings, I will have to go back & get out all the drawings I have put away that my 12 yr. old DD has done & make a memory quilt out of them!! I'm almost done with the one I was making for her for Valentine's Day... a day late.. but, oh well. I had it all pieced together on the floor yesterday when she came home from school. I'm going to finish it today. I'll post a pic on SewForum when I get it completed. It's a "dog lovers quilt". It's pics of her & our beagle & some embroidery on it. |
