Is there a formula/direction for converting a fitted waistband to one that is elastic in the back only? Current pattern has back zipper & 2 small darts in back. I would like to leave the front as the fitted waist band but change the back to elastic. I know I will have to let out the darts, but that's all I know. Thanks in advance. Laura Belle

If you don't want to add extra fullness to the back of the garment, you can just let out your darts and draw a straight line across the dart top to blend it into the waistline. (They get the triangle for the top of the dart by folding the dart and laying it to one side and clipping the top of the pattern...that gives the angle...this is just a reversal of that process). Measure down the seam allowance of your pattern (usually 5/8 inch) and measure across the top of your dart(s). Be sure and allow for each dart in the back...the total measurment of the width of your darts will need to be added to the back wasteband for the proper width. This will not change the size of your skirt. If you wish to add a little fullness to the back too, you will need to slash your pattern from top to bottom and add whatever fullness you want (this is not necessary). If you add any additional fullness, be sure and add it to the back waistband. This should get you started concerning the pattern.

P.S. If you wish to remove the zipper, you need to look at the back seam and make sure that it is not curved in at the top. If it is, you will need to straighten the back so that it goes straight up....sometimes a dart is removed at the back to allow for fitting and it can bes taken out at the back waist...just like at the sides. take a measurment of the top of your skirt if you plan to remove the zipper because it will need to fit over your hips. If there is not enough measurment to remove the zipper and get it comfortably over your hips, you will need to add fabric to the back of the skirt. If you do not remove the front darts, and make some changes at the sides, this could be a problem if you remove the zipper. However, if you just remove the darts and add elastic at the waist, keeping the zipper, there should be no problem.
