I want to install an elastic waistband on a knit skirt. I don't want to make a casing and insert elastic. Instead, I want to sew through the elastic to secure it to the fabric. Anybody know how to do that?

Hi quiltinannie, welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile

Here is one method. With your elastic cut to fit comfortably around your waist (waist measurement minus 5")divide it into quarters and mark.

Place elastic on wrong side of fabric and serge or zig zag from center back. Stretch elastic so that first mark goes to side hem and stitch. Continue on with next mark stretching to center front, etc. Sew entire elastic in this way ending up back at center back. Now you can turn elastic down one turn or not. Anchor your elastic at seams with a vertical stitching line that is not visible on the outside. Hope this is clear.

Unless you have the special elastic with the spaces built in for regular machine stitches , you are not going to be happy with your results.. For everyday regular elastic, when you machine stitch through it, it grows and never shrinks back to normal (before stitching). That is why I always insert mine in a casing and stitch the casing with a zipper foot to make it as snug a fit around the elastic as possible.. If you absolutely have to stitch thru the elastic, then go to a good quality fabric shop and buy the kind of elastic that has the special grooves for stitching..
