Hi Everyone! I ran across a cute idea to make your own garment or quilt labels. I was at a quilt shop and was able to look at some of the most beautiful quilted jackets I had ever seen. The lady that owned the shop was selling them on consignment for one of her friends. What caught my eye too, was the way that she did the garment label. It was basically a four patch sewed together, but set in on an angle (like a diamond shape). She basically trimmed the four patch with specialty scissors that gave the label a cute curvy edge. Her four patches were basically two dark squares and two floral squares (which matched fabric in the Garment). She topped it off with writing the name of her creation, date, etc. with a gold or silver fabric pen. For those of you with embroidery machines, I'm sure it would look awesome with something embroidered as well. Does anyone have other ideas for unique or different garment/quilt labels? Thanks, Libby A Girl Can Never Have Too Much Fabric!

Since I'm a "geek" for my day job and have been married to one for 26 years, I have a lot of experience working with computers. I designed my labels on the computer, then printed them on fabric. I then do a satin stitch around them with embroidery thread. I cut them out and attach to quilts and projects that I sew for my customers. If I can't attach one to a sewing project, I will make a fast pin cushion and sew my label on that to give to the customer. So far the customers that I have done that with, really like it.

Hi Liz, Thank you for your ideas. By the way, I went to see your home pages....Gee Whiz, what a beautiful sewing room. When I'm all grown up, I would love to have a sewing room like that one....wait a minute, I'm 40 (smile). I think Darling Hubby dropped that ball years ago! LOL Well, you do very nice work and have a beautiful sewing room to top it off. Happy Sewing! Libby A Girl Can Never Have Too Much Fabric!

Hi Libby, Stop It! you are making me blush. I'm still not grown up. But I am starting to fill out. I really do love my sewing room. After raising three children (and a DH), it is so nice to have a room all too myself. I had another smaller sewing room, while the kids were home. I would be sewing in there, and they would come in and ask me questions(not sewing related) or want me to do something for them. Then when I wasn't looking they would borrow something from my room, like scissors! Grrrrrr.... Or they would use it as a place to put there things in. But, I managed to use that room and the dining room table for a lot of years. So don't give up. You can have one someday too. BTW, I checked out your website. Did you design it? Are you making any of those purses that you are selling? Tell me the story. Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

I am in desperate need of sewing labels to put in my children's apparel I am trying to sell. I have ordered some from label companies but they are too expensive to continue doing it. Can you help with suggestions. I am somewhat computer literate. If it is too much to take on, thanks anyway. I would love to see your sewing room photos but your link doesn't have them anymore Molly |

Hi Molly, What do you need to know? To start making labels on the computer, go to your local sewing/craft store and buy some fabric sheets for a bubble jet printer. Then all you need is a program to design and print labels. You can get as fancy as you want or just plain. You can use publishing software, scrapbooking software, word processing, or do a search on the web for free graphic programs to download and try. I use a scrapbooking program to design and print mine. Get creative and have fun. Sorry about my link pictures being gone. I don't know what happened there. I'm going to be setting up a site on Yahoo. Hope this helps. Liz Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

Thanks so much for the help. I went to the store and got the paper and actually made my first label! It is plain but, as you said, I am going to have fun with it. Thank goodness for this site and angels like you. Molly |

I haven't come across a pattern yet. Maybe we should design one. I do have stuffed alpaca animals that are imported from Peru. I have thought about trying to make one like those, but I just don't have the time at the moment. Instead I have been spinning and knitting like crazy. It is a portable hobby, so I take knitting with me where ever I go. I knit at work on my breaks, I knitted at the campfire this summer, while working at the ranch. I still have a lot of Alpaca fiber to process and use. The other thing I want to do is to purchase a loom to make pieces of Alpaca material to sew clothes with and I want to weave Alpaca blankets. Gee, only if there were more minutes in the day. I can't wait to be able to retire from my day job.

Thanks so much all of you for the ideas! I've been ordering labels but now I see that it is just a waste when I can do a better job myself. I have the an emb. machine and Printshop. All I need, from what I see is the fabric "paper" for the computer. As soon as I find the time. I'm going try this out. Thanks. Lennie |

Hey Liz, I bought "June Tailor Sew-In Computer Printer Fabric" to make some labels. A pack of 4 sheets was only $5.99 at JoAnn's. After buying it I noticed that cleaning instructions were "Dry Clean Only". It went on to explain that computer ink is water soluable. Have you discovered it isn't? The labels I make will absolutely be washed again and again. What do you know? Thanks, Lennie |

Oh! I forgot to mention that some of them are not treated to be washed in the washing machine. Yes, you have to make sure if it is going to be washed that you have purchased the right material. I make my own material and treat it with a product called bubblejet and rinse. It prepares the material to be used with the inks from the printer and then I treat the material with the rinse, which keeps it from being washed out. I then iron this onto wax paper and cut to an 8.5" x 11" piece to fit into the printer. Whew! I hope this makes sense. Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

I came across the address for a label making tutorial site on another (blush) discussion group today. It is excellent http://www.signaturelabels.com/tutorial.html *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

Have you ever tried the Micron Pigma pens to make the quilt labels? I use them all the time. It's almost as much fun to design the label as it is to make the quilt. I bought 4 books from Kim Churbuck at the quilt show in Lancaster, PA. She has label designs that I trace onto muslin and color with the pigma pens. Once you heat set the pens they are permanent. Then I slip stitch the label onto the back of the quilt. |

I have been thinking about making labels myself. I have a program I bought for around $20-$30 called "Print Master 17" I love to use that program and have even used it to design some logo patterns for my embroidery machine, they actually came out great except I have to work on the letter sizes some more. I hope that give some ideas for a fairly easy to use program to great for designing labels (and birthday cards etc.) Louise

I know a woman who set her embroidery machine to do her full name. She stabilizes a wide (2 inch) satin ribbon in the hoop somehow and after it's embroidered she trims it as needed. It's an over-sized label, which works well for adult garments and quilts. Everyone ohhs and ahhhs over them. also, about the alpaca sub-thread--my mom found a knitting pattern for an alpaca and made it for my daughter. You knit it, stuff it, and then felt it by dropping it into boiling water. If anyone still wants that, lemme know by PM and I'll get the info for you. Andrea

My DD Shauna and I have been really working on the Victorian dollhouse my son Jon and his wife Melissa gave me Christmas 2005. She is finishing putting the siding on the house, and I have sanded and painted most of the gingerbread-type trim for the porch and the roof. I bought a slab of bricks (real little tiny red clay bricks on a screen--you just cut them to the size of your dollhouse room) for the kitchen floor. Also an antique range and some other kitchen stuff. I am also going to get an ice box (not a refrigerator); a tiny replica of the one my grandmother had. The range is just like the gas stove my grandmother had, too. I made a carpet for the staircase and am going to make draperies for the living room and dining room and curtains, bedspreads, etc. I am going to buy an Oriental carpet for the livingroom. It is such fun! I bought a piano and some Victorian furniture for the livingroom. MariLynntexcoffee2 |

Oh, haha, I think it was one of the people reading about the labels you make, and then she saw pics of alpacas on your photo site and asked how to make toy ones! I'll ask my mom for the info...

My mom, having made all the alpacas she plans to (just one), mailed me the pattern. Here's the link to it online: Fiber Trends (http://www.fibertrends.com/viewer/V7_toys.html) I don't think you can order it online--isn't that too bad? PM me and I'll help you out if you would like it. Andrea
