I am making a christening gown for my niece's new baby. I have been dragging my feet, as she wants the gown to be satin...and I have never sewn on satin...

I want to put an heirloom style motive on the front of the gown...but don't know if I can do this on satin...or a satin like fabric.

Any suggestions as to the type of satin or satin like fabric that I should get...and if it is possible to put a design on the front without leaving marks would be very helpful. What type of stabilizer should I use?

Thanks for the help...Marcia

Don't hoop the fabric...use a 'sticky' and just lay the fabric on it.
I wouldn't use a real dense motif, something small and dainty. Satin can and will pucker sometimes. I'd also float some med cut-away underneath.
Practice on a bit of scrap first, so you can adjust the tension if you have to.
(make sure the bobbin thread is the same color as the top thread, just in case...)
I wouldn't use (sticky) spray, water or markers, they may leave spots.

Here are a couple of links for you to help out. I agree with not hooping the fabric as it will leave hoop burn.

Thanks for the help. I kind of thought a sticky would be the way to go.

Thanks for the links...they are very helpful. Will post when I get throught with the project. I plan to use a couple of scraps and try it first...If I don't like it...I will just make some lace and attach it to the gown...at least they will be of my making and not purchased at the store.

I have hooped satin and it left no hoop or burn marks on my material. It might if you use like a satin lining. Can't tell you what kind of satin it was I hooped though. Mine came out lovely. If I still had it, I'd take a picture and post it for you. It was a pretty thick satin-that I do remember.

If I were doing a christening gown, I'd like to do one with a front bodice piece with a honeycomb pattern. Here's how-to, and there are pics of what the pattern looks like when complete. It's hand work.
