I had posted for some smocking advice and was pleased to say I have purchased the A-Z of Smocking by Country Bumpkin. I found the most helpful website and a kind voice on the other end. Check out:
www.adriannes.com. If you find some things you like, you will be pleased. I cant wait for my order to come. I called the toll free order line as I had some questions. Suzanne was the most friendly and helpful person! I just thought I would mention this site. Maybe it will be a different resource.

I have been smocking for about 20yrs. I just love it,and now that I finally have a dgd,it makes it even more fun. You can see some of my dresses that I have done for her at http://www.everythingsewing.net They are scattered about, most are in the smocking section.

Tell me all about your smocking. How long have you been smocking? Do you smock for anyone special?

Nonie,
I am on my first venture in smocking. I purchased an Amanda Jane combo with thread box, A-Z of Smocking by Country Bumpkin, a video by Terrie Wood. I also got the Ultimate Bishop pattern to use. The bishop dress is so nice looking. I teach 2&3 yr preschool and sunday school at church and have seen some the most unique smocking. I love it! I hope I havent bitten off more than I can chew. I do have a great niece that lives next door to me that told she would love to have some new dresses. My oldest daughter has now been married for two years so in the future I may even have a grandchild to smock. I did also purchase a Bonnet kit from Suzanne to try to do the stitches for a small project to begin with. Now after all this, please give me your opinion of the endeavor. I have sewn for many years and love to quilt also. I am doing the Advent Lessons with Joanne. My February block is under construction now. I also made my daughter's wedding gown. Thanks for your reply and may ask advice from time to time. I should have my order sometime this week. Suzanne is shipping it today. I am so excited.

Annette, You sound excited! Good for you, just ask away and I will be happy to help. You will be turning out cute smocked dresses in no time at all. A bonnet is a very good first project, they smock up fast and then you have an adorable item to use. Smocking is basically embroidery on pleats, most of the stitches come from your basic embroidery,so I am sure with all the sewing you have done you will be very comforatable smocking.

Feel, welcome to also post any questions you might have on my message board. There are other gals there that smock and you might get a couple different answers,to your question, but it will let you now you do have choices in the way you do a stitch.

Thank you Mary, now, you don't have to have a dgd to smock for, there are all sorts of smocked items, Christmas/Easter ornaments. Napkin rings-pillows,just for starters.

Thanks so much Nonie. I will be having fun for sure. Thanks for the advice and I will be asking questions. Here is the first one. Do you use a particular color of thread in the pleater. I noticed a bright shade of orange thread that Suzanne had and thought perhaps one would need to see this thread???????? By the way, your projects are lovely Nonie. If anyone else has pictures of their smocking, I would love to see them. Nonie wherever did you come up with the pattern on your pillow, I love it.

Annette,be sure to click on the gallery and also the archived gallery buttons on my site, there you will see smocking others have done. I will see if I can find some sites for you that have some nice smocked dresses. Handmades is always a good one for inspiration. I don't have their site addy right off,but I think you can find it by searching. Or there is a link to it from my site.

As far as thread in your pleater, quilting thread is recommended for its strength. But! I use regular thread and have not had any trouble,as far as color never use red,it will leave marks when removed. Other then that, any color that will stand out so you can see the rows easily. I use thread that I have ended up with and know I will never use for sewing. Like orange,or an ugly green.

I didn't use a pattern for the pillow, just made it up. I really didn't give a certain size because you are free to make it any size you want.

If you want to make the pillow, and need help just ask,it is really easy.

Mary, The bishop I made Zoe for last Easter still fit's,so I made her a smocked top, pant's set for the egg hunt. I do need to redo her Easter bonnet, that should be fun.

How do I send pictures? do I need to resize them? I will send a picture of her pant's set.
