Has anyone heard of the new Brother SE 270 D? I just learned of it and I wondered if anyone has tested it out. That's the trouble with the new ones--they sound promising, but who wants to be the first one to fork over the cash and see how it holds up??

I saw that machine at Walmart. I believe it was priced less than what some of the reviewers paid for it. I had one of the similar Brother machines without the embroidery feature and the thread cassette stopped working in just a few weeks and I returned it. It took more fiddling than regular threading it seems. I really didn't care for it. The machine did stitch well and performed well in other areas..except the computer screen at times said to put the pressure foot down when it was down. One day it would not work for this reason..the screen was stuck on "put the foot down.".between the cassette and the screen..I had really had enough. I have seen posts from others that do like the Brother cassette machines. It might do lovely embroidery. But even so..my personal preference is to find a machine without the thread cassette. I have a Brother made (White 3300) stand alone embroidery machine that is a great little work horse and does nice embroidery. The machine we are speaking of also might embroidery nicely.

Hmm...thanks for the food for thought. I called a Brother dealer and they told me this is a "little" machine, not "full size," andbasically a travel model. Now, I still haven't seen it for myself, but I can't help wondering if they were trying to turn me off to it b/c independent dealers don't carry it. (I just learned that too.) Yes, I watched an online video of the thread cassette being inserted, and it looks like a silly pain!

Andrea, this is one good working little machine from what I hear! I know someone who has it and loves it dearly. Brother puts out some great embroidery machines and sewing machines. I have a Brother sewing machine that is about 12 yrs. old and it has never been to the shop once. The Brother embroidery machines are the easiest to learn to embroider on and has a 5 * rating in popularity. I have the PE 170 D Brother embroidery machine and it's a great little machine also. I love it and it was very easy to learn to embroider with and does a great job for me. The price on this machine at Walmart is a good price. If you pass it up because you think it would not be a good machine-you will be making a big mistake unless you can afford a machine with a larger stitch field or something that has more bells and whistles!

Andrea,
That Brother dealer was just telling you the truth. I've seen that machine as I was thinking of getting it. It is what I would call 3/4 sized. I wasn't impressed with it but I am a quilter and I couldn't see myself quilting with the size of it. It may be a nice little machine but wasn't for me. I just wanted to let you know that the dealer was being honest.

Andrea,

If Susie says she saw this machine and it didn't look good to her, I'd say stay away from it. If it's that small I don't think I'd want to sew on it. I have a Brother Embroidery that does a great job and is know to be a good low end machine and is very user friendly. However, I have a Brother Sewing Machine also that I love. I'm glad I stayed away from the combo! This machine was made in mass quanities and that's why you can buy it at a good price. Susie would know what she's talking about!

this machine is indeed a 3/4 machine... like the Janome Gem, it is designed to be a travelling machine to take to classes, on vacation, etc... It's very light weight.. something like 11 pounds... so far, eveyone I know personally who has this machine is enjoying it... and from what I understand, it is relatively easy to bypass the thread cassette and just use a thread stand...

just my 2 cents..

I have the Brother SE270 and I love it as an embroidery machine. I decided to go with it because i had never done any machine embroidery and didn't know if I would really use it. Didn't want to sink a lot of money into something I wouldn't use a lot. So far, this little machine hasn't let me down at all. I have a Old Elna, SU for my "sewing" machine, but honestly, I haven't even used it. Just the Brother. I don't expect it to last more than a few years, but then I will know if I want to put the money into a top-end embroidery machine. It has opened a whole new world of sewing to me. for the money, I don't think it can be beat.

I have the SE270, and I really enjoy it, I bought it for the Disney feature.
I got it for Christmas, and have just been playing with it. I did two towels yesterday, and they came out fine. I still have a lot of learning, and I do have a thread holder, You still have to use the cassette for threading, and I do not like that, but put up with it. I have already told my DH that I want the new Brother, that has the color desplay area, and used the floppies.
But for now I will use my baby machine, and some day it will grow up to a full sized embrodiery only machine.

I was told about this sit this afternoon by MarilynnTX who writes articles for this site, I can't thank her enough. I have read everything from soup to nuts, and I am learning so much.
