Hi Sable,
I saw you were from NZ and I have a quick question for you. My husband is a kiwi and we are going to NZ in TWO WEEKS!! yeah! Anyway, of course, I'm going to need to go to fabric stores while I am there! Do you have any suggestions? We will be mostly around Palmerston North but also time in Wellington and Aukland. I am mainly looking for wool to make diapers with. TIA!
Kelli

Thanks.
I just thought it would be nice to get info from a local..someone who has been to the stores and would have more information than I could possibly get on Google.

Hi Kelli
I'm afraid I won't be much help, I live in Christchurch which is in the South Island of New Zealand. All the places you are going to are in the North Island. Best suggestion I can make is to check the Yellow Pages phone directory wherever you are staying and look up "Fabrics-Retail". That will get you a list of what's in the area. Then maybe ring some of them and see what they've got. Be aware that in Auckland there is quite a large geographic area covered by the YP's, so make sure you have a map, and avoid travel during peak times as they have some problems with gridlock.
I have a link to the YP here: http://www.yellowpages.co.nz/Pages/AllLocations/0,2294,a1229_b1954_c658_l0_o0_v2,00.html
This takes you to the drapers listing for all NZ, and you can then select the appropriate location from that. Palmerston North is under Manawatu.
One store seems to be in most towns is Spotlight. They have some good stuff, but quite a lot of lower end stock, haven't seen much in the way of pure wool there.
If you do end up in Christchurch, the place to go for wool is "Global Fabrics" at 223 Tuam St. Another place that has some quite good wools is "Fabric Vision" at 141 Cashel St. Both are within walking distance of the CBD.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much, that really does help. We may go to the South Island for a day but probably won't spend much time there as DHs family and friends are all on the north island, but the YP link is GREAT and hubby can just help me pick a place that is near to where we will be. He thinks my sewing makes me a "Grandma" so I want to make it as easy as possible before we go because I know he won't be much help :)
Thanks again...can't wait to see your beautiful country!

Hi again,
Just thought of a couple more fabric stores in Christchurch that are within walking distance of the CBD. Haralds is in Lichfield St close to Colombo St, they have a good range of wools, and tend to be better quality than some of the others. We also have Kutwell in Colombo St (South of the Square, near the South City Complex), this is one of the stores you sometimes find a real bargain in, but they have some real rubbish too!
Haralds do have another branch in the burbs, a place called Papanui, but I suspect if you get to ChCh, the CBD would be easier to find.
If you need help when you get to Christchurch, give me a call. My number is 3382442 (only 7 digits in NZ). Or you can e-mail me <email address removed for privacy>
If we met up, likely I would have my 2 wee boys with me, but I can sometimes hand them over to the MIL. It doesn't tend to be easy to shop with bored kids in tow.

Hi Kelly,
I live in Welligton. There are 2 spotlight stores one in Porirua mega centre, the other Hutt Rd Thorndon, Arthur Toyes in the central city in Willis St, Global Fabrics again in the city Garrett street(off Cuba), The Fabric warehouse in Thorndon (just South of Spot light about 0.75km). Evan's in High St Lower Hutt - they have a good button selection and have seen nappy material etc by the metre there in the past, one last one is The Fabric and curtain Warehouse out in Porirua shopping centre. There is a good quilt material shop in Upper Hutt - Thimbles and Threads and a good Embroidery, quilt shop in Thorndon shopping centre called Nancy's Embroidery I only know where the quilt material shops are in Palmerston North, and those enroute between Welligton and Palmerston North. Auckland I have only been to 2 shops there One in Howick - Arthur Toyes, and Bronwyns Fabrics in Takapuna(over on the North Shore) she does have a good selection of fabric and lots of inspiration
Enjoy your time here. There is a definate nip in the air these mornings but the days we are around 19 -20 C
