Hi! I'm new here and I love this site already! I was wondering if there are any sites for free patterns? I am looking for girls skirt patterns for size 6 and up. I want to make GD the new skirts for the season and lots of them. I basically want straight skirt patterns, maybe some with a little flair at the bottom. Thanks |

Hi Auntysue, I am making skirts for my GD's but they are a little bigger than yours. Joann and Hancock usually have patterns for 1.99 or sometimes .99. When they have them I usually stock up on things like kids clothes even if I'm not going to use them right away I'll have them and they are cheap. I don't know of any free pattens on the web right off but if you find some let me know. I have a cute patten for my girls that is a size 8 which look at the measurements it might fit a ready to wear size 6 little girl. Three very easy patterns I found were Simplicity 5646, 5225 and one that I have which I think is out of print is Simplicity 9728. they have a straight skirt with a flounce around the bottom. I added a row of lace around the bottom of one of the skirts and it came out cute. Happy stitching |

I have seen a few free patterns for things on the web; but most of it isn't very special. The only bookmark I have is here> http://preview.sewnews.com/library/sewnews/library/aafash0303.htm<, which is a pattern for making a skirt from a pillowcase. I'm sure a good thorough search on Google would probably turn up a bunch more. "No more twist! No more twist!"

Hey DragonLady, I like that idea. I have plenty of blank pillow cases for embroidery. That would make a great skirt for the DGD's. Thanks for that idea. |

You're welcome, Mother in Law. I saved the link because I think it would be a great project for my daughter. I have a bunch of older single pillowcases that are too nice to use for rags. I was just planning to drop 'em off at the thrift store, but she might like making herself skirts out of them.

Buy the kwik sew book for children, it has lots of traceable patterns good ideas for changing things, easy to use, good for a good range of sizes and well worth the money. |

There is a website with a pattern for Drawstring waistbands at http://www.sewyoungsewfun.com/freeprojects/default.htm You can also take a pair of jeans that has wore out and cut of just below the zipper area and watch so you don't cut the pockets. Then measure a piece of cordinating material (print or solid color) one and a half to two times the measurement of the jean area you cut off, by the length you want the skirt and add extra for the hem. Seam the short ends together. Then gather the top of the material to fit the jeans and sew together 1/2" seam. Then hem the bottom of the skirt. You can also pleat the materil instead of gathering it. Just measure the bottom of the cut of jeans and add enough material to make the pleats. Press the pleats in the material and baste the pleated side of material before sewing to the jean part for easier handling. You may want to roll hem the bottom of the material before pleating and seaming the backside. Hope you can use these ideas. VicRae |

Thanks so much ladies. I will check out those sites you gave me. I just think the new skirts are cute and my GD would love them but they are in size 7 and up. I guess I'm in for some pattern alteration! LOL! I love you all's ideas! |

Don't know if you have access to any 2nd hand stores, but here we have Salvation Army and Mennonite Central Committee stores, where I can get tons of patterns for kids clothes for 25 cents a pattern. Laura
