Who would have thought that sewing pillows could be dangerous to your health?

Bird flu danger from feathers
Monday March 07 2005

Poultry feathers imported from China could carry the avian influenza virus, poultry health expert Hugh Pennington told the British Broadcasting Corporation at the weekend.

Many countries have banned poultrymeat imports from China because of bird flu outbreaks. A year ago some, including the United States and the United Kingdom, nevertheless resumed importing feathers from duck, chicken and turkeys for making pillows and garments and, in the US, as a source of protein in livestock feed.

Can you say "down jackets"? No thank-you, I'll stick to my polyfill, Thinsulate.

Just another reason not to buy a bubble jacket but to make my own.

I never thought about the virus being passed on by down feathers, but it is logical. Course, I don't buy down stuffing, my DH seems to be allergic to feathers.
