I have made adorable rompers for two sisters. The fabric is white background with lots of colorful butterflies. The outfits look great but lack something to make them pop. I was thinking of making a butterfly to sit on their shoulders but I'm at a loss as to how to construct it and have it durable enough for a 7 year old and a 3 year old. Any suggestions?
I'm thinking along the lines of something that can be pinned on the shoulder strap and removed for washing but soft and not scratchy.

Would you consider crochet? My sister used to crochet these cute little butterflies and use them on girls' ponytails. I don't have the pattern, but I think it was something very simple, like a crocheted circle, which was compressed in the middle to make the sections of the winds, and then she used a dark crochet thread for antennae. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find it online for free. They took her about 15 min. to make.

Here ya go! It took two sec to find. It's shown in this site as a magnet. So instead of gluing a magnet on the back, sew on a snap and you can snap it on and off to make it removable. (I'd just sew it right onto the rompers myself!) You can stitch them right onto a few of those soft ponytailers you can get in the shampoo aisle, or glue them onto barrettes to go with the outfit.

Would it be possible to take one of the butterflies from the fabric, pad and back the butterfly and stitch around like an applique. Use a pin or snap or velcro to attach it as a "pin" to the strap...like one of them escaped or something?

Thanks for the great butterfly ideas. I don't crochet but you got me thinking and I found a cute idea online for a butterfly magnet that I'm adapting. I think it's perfect. It never occurred to me to do a little 'Googling' for ideas.
This website is awesome.

I was doing some downloads at the Bernina site today and ran across this butterfly that looks like free standing lace. They had made a baby's mobile out of it. It might be perfect if you happen to have access to an embroidery machine. This link should take you to the site. It is in the second tab under the headers on the WWW.BERNINAUSA.com site. They are located in the free Bernina project ideas. The embroidery downloads are nice too. The butterflies are avail in the old Deco PES format which should be easy to change if you don't have ART. At the other end of the headers you will find some project ideas too.
