Easter is almost here, what are we making? I finished my 4 GD's dresses. Since we have been warned we may have more snow, convincing my older GD that a cute summer dress was not going to work, was a challenge. We settle for a dress with a jacket. She likes simple, but really liked the lacey shawls that she sees everywhere. So we included one of those too for when it gets warmer (I hope soon) She is only 5 but has her own ideas on how she should dress. My youngest daughter who has a 2 year old decided that she wanted her D's dress out of crepe. Then a stiff overlay, which was a slight challenge, but worked out in the long run. The youngest GD was my choice in fabric and style. She is only 4 months so a cute cotton dress for her. The MGD I do not see much and her mom is not a sewer, nor is her maternal GM. So when I sew for her I need to be there. We settled on a cotton print which worked out. Has a apron type over it which when it gets warmer she can wear as a sundress. This is what I am doing how about the rest of you? Summer Summer

Well, I don't do Easter -- although my girls did celebrate spring that weekend with new outfits, eggs and candy when they were little -- but I'm getting ready for the week my daughter graduates from law school. It's not until early June but I want my clothes done and out of the way. I'm making a straight skirt out of an oriental silk brocade. It's black with dragonflies. The top is a white on white silk brocade with little flowers. I'm going to turn the facing to the outside, using the skirt fabric to tie the two together. I've been looking but haven't found buttons yet. I'm also making a spring jacket out of a black and while silk suiting. I found a fantastic black and white print for the lining. It is white with black silhouettes of copies of old fashion plates from the 19 teens and 20s. Very cool for lining and the collar I think. I'm going to do a bit of the fringe that is so popular around the collar and down the front. I'm making my daughter a simple dress and light jacket too. That's my spring sewing which is a close as we get to Easter around here anymore. Dorothy |

You are two productive ladies! My Easter sewing is much less fancy - but just as much fun as I anticipate delivering my gift. I'm busy sewing a dozen bassinet sheets and a dozen burp cloths to put with the crocheted baby aphgan, knitted bunny rabbit, and freshly painted antique wicker bassinet we're taking to our son and daughter-in-law for Easter. They live 1000 kms. away and are expecting their first baby in July. Maybe next year I'll get to make a little Easter dress! |

Dorothy, when you turn the facing to the outside, do you have to cut it a touch bigger?

I'm mentoring a young lady(16) through her own designed prom dress and I have some nice tan linen I keep meaning to make up into trousers. And I want to play around with my serger some more and try out some other stitches.

Mary -- I guess you would want to make the facing at least a little bigger when you turn it out. I'll be using a design I drew up a couple years ago and it is quite a bit bigger. It really looks good, is a great technique and very easy. Dorothy |

I'm not really sewing Easter Dresses this year, at least not at this time. I have to make a couple of 1840's outfits for my DDs and the leader of the Crew. I don't even know if I will have an outfit by then. (March 25). When DD1 realized that the event was the Friday and Sat. Before Easter she said "You don't Have to make our Easter dresses this year." Which is a good thing because I just got the material for their outfits on Sunday and haven't had a chance to even cut it out, with having to wash it, dry it and go to work yesterday, and back to Wally World for groceries. But I know if I get thru these outfits this weekend, one of them will ask for an Easter Dress/Skirt/Outfit. And if its simple enough I might get it done. |

I have made a little gingham eyelet dress for my youngest granddaughter (2) and a skirt and matching top (long sleeves with ruffles and a peasant neckline) for the oldest granddaughter (7). The oldest GD loves to come with me to choose the fabric for her clothes, and to choose the pattern which we do from the internet. She enjoys looking at the patterns, and making her choices. I have also made myself a beautiful top to go with my evening skirt for our upcoming cruise. When both my daughter and son were small I would make them each an outfit for Easter. As well as the Easter egg hunt, they always enjoyed waking up to find their new clothes. Note: I have a difficult time with narrow rolled hems, so for the ruffle, and due to the lightness of the cotton, I faced the ruffle so that it is now the same on both sides. |

I'm making fabric bowls. I was at Joanne's on Sunday and they already had the Easter material marked down at 50%. So I picked up a couple of yards. I plan on whipping up some bowls for around the house. I also want to needle felt some eggs to place in them. I have been working on a quilted wall-hanging which needs to be done by April for my daughter & son-in-law's anniversary. I don't have little girls to make dresses for anymore.

I am making simple cotton Easter dresses for my 3 dds. Easter service is sunrise (ie: 5AM) service this year for first time in 10 yrs at my church. Seems I am the only one in my family going. So the Easter dresses will be for the egg hunting festivities and visiting with grandpa & grandma who are making the 5 hr drive down to spend Easter with us. I will post pics as they are finished. If there is time, I hope to make an Easter outfit for myself. Our bishop requests ladies in white and men in black every year, and it is so hard for me to find in rtw. I have a great pattern, if I can only find some nice material and time! Jen in CA |

Very nice, Liz. I saw a prograam on how to put removable handles on the fabric bowls. Haven't try it yet. Its one of those things that have gone into the to do pile.

I finished my Easter outfit in the nick of time. I can hardly wait to have granddaughters to sew for like some of you ladies. I haven't gotten my pictures thumbnailed, etc. like I want yet, but here is my new outfit (http://www.bchboergoats.homestead.com/sewing1.html) at the top of this page. I posted a review at the pattern review site. Melanie |

Love the blouses, they look so nice and comfy. The jacket is nice and that skirt is great on you!

Well done Melanie, the jacket looks great. Asymetric hems are fun. I have nearly finished my linen trousers (need to hem them and sew a belt). Mended a blouse today and hope to rehem a skirt to go with it. It is bias cut and is pulled by the lining. I need to unattach them and let them hang seperately. My apprentice is doing very well on her own designed bias cut evening gown, zip, facing and hemming next week and it is done. The dress has to be ready by April 19th for her textiles exam. She has really grown in confidence and techniques over the weeks we have been working. love and kisses, Jan

For the most part I lamed out on Easter sewing (had a birthday and a large baby shower to throw in the last 2 weeks) but the night before (http://kelly.hogaboom.org/2005/03/diary-of-mad-seamstress.html) I did manage this for my daughter: http://kelly.hogaboom.org/images/eastermontage.jpg these aren't great pictures to see the print on the fabric, but it is a retro repro bunny / Easter egg print - one green, one pink. With a little petticoat underneath she was a cutie at church for sure! see the mundane life of a housewife.
