Good Day all: I am, at the request of my teenage dtr making a dress for Easter. Either that or I am about to add to the pile of want to be garments. I'm using McCall's pattern 4296 (Evening Elegance view B). This yoke has me ready to yoke myself up. Can't tell where to attach or even how. I've laid the instructiones on the floor and viewed the sketch from every angle. From the way I have it pinned it appears that her bossom would be fully exposed as the contrast fabric is sheer. Now I'll have you know the model in the pic is fully covered except the see thru sleeve area. Plzzzzzzzzzzz help....I really want to be good at making stuff from patterns. P.S. I spent much time cruising through the threads on this site. You galz really know what the devil you're talkin' about. Very well thought out solid info. Tabatha |

Tabatha, I don't sew a whole lot of garments, so I don't feel qualified to opine here... but hopefully somebody will come along soon to help you out... MO life is too short, not to explore

Tabatha without actually having the pattern in hand and reading the instructions myself I can't be sure, but I did go to the website and checked out what the dress looks like. It's a very lovely dress and I'm sure it will be beautiful. From the looks of the lavendar dress, it looks like the yolk is lined, sleeves do not. As to how/where to attach the yolk did you transfer all of your notches/dots etc? Hope this helps as it is very vague. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with more help.

I happen to have that pattern! I had wanted to make view C in velour but my daughter didn't like it. Anyway, The markings for placement are dots on the guide "F". In column 2, section 3 you gather and adjust the yolk to fit pattern guide "F" and tie off the gathering strings to stabilize the yolk. I don't really like this because I would think that the yolk would tend to shift. However, if you stabilize it with a small piece of twill, it will add bulk to your seam. If you can think of something that would work, it would make the insertion a lot easier. Many times pattern F would be a piece that is sewn to the back of the fabric to stabilize the yolk but in this case it wouldn't work because the easement for the bustline is in the yolk and you need the fullness. The sleeves are sheer but the insert is two pieces of sheer fabric. For the purposes of modesty, I would look for a layer of something other than sheer for lining this piece (I would probably use a piece from the dress fabric as a backing). Page 3, center column reads "All Views". This shows the prep of the dress (body). Column 4 shows placement of the yolk. You will have to match the dots from the guide to the dots on the dress and match the shoulder seams to get this to fit. When you sew this yolk into the top "U" of the dress. I would sew from the yolk side so that you can make adjustments to the gathers as you go. It will be a bit like sewing a very full gathered sleeve cap into a dress. It will be easy to sew into the corners and all but I think your problem will be in keeping the gathers even. This dress reminds me of the old western looking corsets that you see in the movies. If you just use the two layers of sheer for the insert the bust will be kind of "out there" because of the way the "U" shape goes below the bust. I think it is a very cute pattern for a teenager and that is why I had purchased it for mine. I hope that this helps a little bit, if I can clarify anything I'll try.

Eureka!!! Pam you got me going in the right direction. I was thinking of adding some fabric from the dress to the yoke, but wasn't well thought out enough to see if it was necessary. Now, I am at work, but soon as I get to mi casa I'm going to do it just the way you described. Always afraid to jump in. WHy? |

Pam, it worked like a charm. I thought I might have jinxed myself by stating if this dress wasn't done this week I'd purchase one. My mistake was in the fabric choice. I initially thought the main fabric would line the sheer, but pattern nor instructions said so. In the future I will look at patterns as more of a jumping off point than some holy commandments and adjust accordingly. Thank you SEW much Pam. |

I'm so glad it worked out for you! I learned a long time ago that there are many ways to do things. As long as you get the result you wanted, the way you get it done (as long as it is legal and moral) doesn't matter.
