I have a pair of denim jeans that need to be taken in about two inches, but I don't know what I need to do to complete them. Can someone please help me, I'm new to this. If possible give very detailed responses. Thanks. |

I've never taken in jeans, only men's dress pants. I took off the back belt loop, and took the back seam in as much as I needed, then put the loop back on. I don't know if this would work for jeans though.

Too big through the waist? I remove the waistband from the jean itself for about 4 or 5 inches either side of the center back. Then take out the center back seam from the waist to wherever they fit, well, an inch or two past that. Re-sew the center back seam from the inside to fit you. I don't cut the fabric away, I just smooth it out and topstitch from the outside to match the original as best I can. Now the waist band: I take out the stitching at the very top of the waistband, too, and open it up to lay flat. Then I cut it at an angle. This way, the seams of the waistband don't all line up, and it's less bulky. When you pin the waist back together, the edges that you cut line up, but the waistband pieces will be at an angle, as if you were making bias binding. Once you sew this seam, press open the seam allowances, turn the long edges back in and topstitch the band back to the jean. The "center" seam on the waistband now is a "v" shape, half inside the waistband, and half outside. Because it's not right at the center, you'll have an easier time re-stitching the center back belt loop to the pant. Clear as mud? Well, it's been a long time since i've taken in any jeans. |
