A couple of language things... I would like to know exactly what a basque (this one I've heard about dresses and skirts...?) and a yoke are, where they are applied, etc. I'm not too sure about the words. If somebody could make this clear to me I would be most grateful.
Thanks a lot.

PD. If you could refer me to photos on the internet it could also help.

Hi Selene, I'm not sure what a Basque is but a yoke is the front or back of a dress or top. It's the part above the waist. Here is an example of a yoke dress.

The white part of this dress is the yoke. Hope this helps

A basque is a close fitting bodice
A yoke is the part of a garment that is closely fitted, either around the neck and shoulders or at the hips, from which an unfitted or gathered part of the garment hangs.

An easy and common example of a yoke is the piece that runs from shoulder to shoulder across the back of many men's (and women's) shirts.

Ok, so I didn't answer this question initially because I didn't know what a basque was. After some light reseach, I still don't know what it is. It has to do with shaping, but I don't know if it is the shape of the pattern or if it is specific seaming. Here is a reference to pictures in conjunction with patterns from the mid-1800's.

http://www.marquise.de/en/1800/schnitte/s1800b.shtml

If you will look at Plaat IV and look at the illustrations given, Fig 92 seems to achieve shape with pleats and cut while 97 and 98 seem to achieve the same by cutting but figures 92-98 all seem to be illustrations of basque. As far as I can tell, in each illustration small horizontal darts are taken at the waist line to give a more fitted waist and finer fit to the garment while serving to pivot the skirt and give the skirt a more full appearance. Given the fact that they are included in the same area with Princess seams, it looks to me like the basques have some relationship with the vertical curved cutting and seaming that gives the lovely fit to our more recent princess line dresses and simular items. What can you find out? This is a little like trying to figure out a puzzle. Figure 94 actually has the word basque written in a phrase running upward from the lower right part of the plate, but I don't read foreign languages.

Thankyou so much for your replies! I think I've now figured out with your help what a yoke is, in spanish it would be called "canesú". But the basque business is still confusing me... I'm not too sure about it, I'll carry on investigating.
