hhmmmm....when you have a hysterctomy you go into menopause, because they usually take out your ovaries too. If you have been on estrogen for all these yrs (why ????) yes going off all of a sudden will make you have menopause symptoms. (like any drug you stop/start). My mother, and grandmother had hystrectomies at early ages (20's/30's) and neither had menopause symptoms OR meds of any kind after....of course this was YEARS ago.....if they left your overies in, (they make your hormones) you will have menopause symptoms during menopause. Your Dr should have explained all this to you...did you ask him/her ???

I had a complete hysterectomy 7weeks ago today. Everything was taken--uterus, cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. My doc put me on Estrogen only--I am on an estrogen gel that I apply to my arm once per day. I had been menopausal for 6 years prior to surgery, so I had already been through all those symptoms. During that time, I was on a patch---Combipatch, which contained both estrogen and progestin. I do think there is some benefit to the hormone replacement therapy, although every woman has to decide what's best for her. My doc didn't really give me a choice about the estrogen, but she did give me a choice about what type--pills, gel, or patch. I chose the gel because the Combipatches always irritated my skin.

I would guess that your hot flashes and other symptoms may very well have to do with the fact that you stopped your estrogen, (and mind you, this is only a guess as I am not a doctor). If you wanted to continue with it, then I can highly recommend the gel--if your doctor would allow you to try that. My doc told me that I had to commit to staying on this estrogen for a minimum of the next 4 years, and I think some of that has to do with my age (I'm 48), and then she said we might fight about it if I wanted to get off of it!

In my case, since I had several abnormal pap smears, my doc says that I will have to have regular pelvic exams and pap smears even after the surgery. Once I have normal pap smears for 5 years, then I would be allowed to discontinue those.

My advice would be to visit a good, reliable gynocologist in your area and explore all the options with him/her. A lot has changed since you had your surgery and there may be other options that are right for you. :bluesmile

ty for the info..i asked my doc. when i wanted to go off the estrogen..because of a lot of the bad feedback..he said he understood me being scared..and also said the chances are the same for me to get breast cancer etc. on or off. so i chose to go off. I have been fine..and the hot flashes are of course nothing i cant put up with..other than wanting to run barefoot in the snow everynow and then..to cool off...lol..thanks agin for all the input

I don't blame you for wanting to get off of the estrogen. My doc told me that my chances of breast cancer and colon cancer actually go down with being on estrogen only. That was good news to me! :bluesmile

Ihad mine five years ago. I am now 42 It was complete as my husband says nothing left but the playground. I was put on the patch and I love it. I did try to go off of it twice and the hot flashes just got worse. I stayed off for six months bothtimes and decided that my sanity was worth thr risk. I have been changing it every two week rather than every week for about five months and it seems that the flashes are not as bad as before. I also was told and read that a pap test was not needed due to the fack that the pap looks for cervical cancer. who knows I guess the choice is ours to make. One of the few that we seem to be allowed to make any more.

Hi Topaz
I am 64 and had my hysterectomy at age 35 as well. I did not have my ovaries out so went through menopause, tho earlier than probably would have without hyst. I had some hot flashes and in fact still get a few, but not as many as others seem to. I tried different estogens at different times as my doctor recommended it for other health reasons. I hated the estrogen as I felt nauseated like I was pregnant every time I was on it and never lasted longer than 3 months at a time.
Several things I learned. If you are on the round side - read overweight, you have a natural source of estrogen stored in your fat cells (a reason thinner women are more prone to osteoporosis). Going off the estrogen, probably made your body adjust to the loss by pumping out more natural estogen. It will stablize after awhile, but longer than a month.
There are several Chinese herbs that work quite well for signs of menopause. I can't recall the name, but dong... something like that. Personally I find genseng and Vitamin E help. I started to take both in my 30's as I have fibrocystic breasts and it really helped. I seem to have more mild hot flashes when I stop taking the supplements even today. Soy products also help hot flashes. I like to drink soy milk but there are other products as well, including capsules. Soy has a type of estrogen in it. Yams are another source of food that help hot flashes. My doc prescribed progesterone cream for me and it helps the hot flashes but 1/2 the time I forget to use it. As I know a fair bit about physiology I can't figure out why the progesterone works, but it does. An endocrinologist here in BC is pushing it and it must be specially compounded at a compounding pharmacist.

Avoiding caffeine products is a must for anyone having hot flashes. :coffee:

Good luck

This subject is probably as varied as each individual...My Gyn took a lot of time explaining the research and the results and why the tests were stopped..He has been a doctor for 40 yrs; so he has a pretty good take on what goes on with his patients....I have been on hormones since my early 40s (now 57) and had to switch docs when mine retired (some nerve!!..lol..) Anyway, this guy switched me to something for a year that I hated (had cramps and NEVER had that before) By then, Prempro has come out with a very low dose of hormones...It took about three months of vague menapause symptoms before I stabilized and am now very happy....Of course, I have no problems that would cause me to hesitate to take hormones ( cystic breasts, thrombosis, history of breast cancer, smoking, etc...)
All I can say is this...when they close the cover to my casket (when I'm 99 yrs old..) they had better include my hormones!!! Otherwise, I might think that I didn't make it to the right place....roflol...
