Hi everyone,
I am working on my oldest GD's summr clothes. She is only 5 but is a big girl. At birth she was over 10 pounds and is growing fast. The problem I am having is for shorts, pants, etc, I have to do a few alterations. Her waist and her hips are both 28 inches. The size 10 patterns fit her the best in all but the waist. Should I fit the hip and alter the waist 4 inches and the length or buy a larger and alter both the hips and waist and length? Nothing fits her right in RTW, I am always taking up the hems, so they do not drag. I would like to have one pattern that fits her well and I can use over and over. Any ideas would be helpful, since I am getting very frustrated by this point.

When you buy a ready to wear item, is is only the hem that needs fixing? Perhaps you could find a RTW item in a style and fit that works for her, adjust the length, and then take it apart to use it as a template for a pattern for her. As far as altering commercial patterns, let your own skill-level guide you; Some people have no problem altering a pattern through the waist. I'd find it easier to get the pattern size that fits through the waist and then customize the ease in the legs and the hem on my own.
Well, she's lucky to have you looking out for her fitting needs! :bluewink:

Summer,
My gr-dau just turned 8 and she is not fat, but she is solid and large for her age, but I always have to cut off and hem her jeans.. I have recently discovered the girls patterns that McCall and Butterick have that come in regular and girls Plus sizes.. They have 1/2 after the size numbers.. I have found they fit her perfectly.. I was so frustrated trying to sew for her until I found these patterns.. I have 2 from Simplicity , but not a variety like I found in the McC and Butt books..They are so great and have several garments in each .. I buy them when they are on sale.. I keep the list in my purse so I know which ones I still need to purchase.. my first time I got 5 buttericks for 1.99 each.. What a bargain ! !
