I recently got into spinning wool. I also discovered other fun crafts to do with wool. I have been trying my hand at needle felting and wet felting the wool. I knitted a wool hat for myself then felted it. Here is a picture of the hat when it had dried. http://www.yesalbum.com/v001/SailorLiz/FiberProjects/hat_felted.jpg

I have more pics of my fiber projects, along with my spinning wheel in my photo album below. If interested go to my photo album and once logged in, choose fiber projects.

Are any of you doing these crafts?

Hi Liz..

That hat is great... I am working on a purse right now..

I would knit all of the time years ago. As a matter a fact, I was making a beautiful lime green cotton sweater, 20 some odd years ago.. One night I change my patterns of life and did not pick up the needles to continue this beauty.

Then I went to a bead show last year.. noticed this beautiful bead/yarn sweater.. I went over to a yarn shop picked up wool and starting to KNIT again.. I am HOOKED..

So... when I am in a fabric store.. you can rest assure that the following week I visit the yarn shop across the street. That way.. everyone can stay in business .

I would love to share some ideas with you...

Karen,

I'm glad to hear that someone else is interested in this technique. I was also thinking of trying a purse next. Are you following a particular pattern or designing it as you go? The felted purses are really the "hot" item for the middle school girls in my area. I went to a craft store to look for some already spun colored wool and their shelves were cleaned out of all the 100% wool. The girls were bringing their mothers, aunts, grandmothers (anyone that could knit or crochet) into the store and picking out the colors for them to make the purses.

"Are you following a particular pattern or designing it as you go?"

I am following a pattern... but I will be putting some embellishments on it after the wash... I find knitting this enjoyable, mysterious & enchanting.. most of the stitching is just knit not even a purl; therfore I can enjoy the time spent because I really do not have count constantly!!

Mysterious... I have decided to pick up a "purple with flecks of white", therefore I really do not know for sure what the outcome after the was will bring.. so I get quite exciting once I see it.

Enchanting... I can design with anything I wish...

I have done so many searches on the different patterns... I look for them like I look for fabric... it is addicting.. therefore I LOVE IT..

I can send a copy of the bag pattern I have as it is soooo very easy and a great experience without tossing in the needles... PM me and I will forward..

Karen,

I also collect patterns as much as I collect the yarn. :bg: They are added to my "to do wish list" for projects.

So I will take you up on the pattern. I have several sites bookmarked with patterns from surfing also.

PM on the way.

Karen,

I felted my purse a couple of days ago. I like it! I'm now working on the handle, buttons and maybe some embellishments. I'll post a pic once it is finished. There is so many possibilities! I can't wait to start another. I can make them for all of the women in my family.

Liz.. I am so happy that you are enjoying the making of the "felted" purse..

I have made a yellow one with a bumble bee button then I put some embrodery (sp) flowers on the front and back.

I do not have the ability to put the picture up on the web...

I have not started the hat yet.. but have all intentions of doing so...

Karen,

I finished the purse last evening. I was thinking of sending it to my oldest daughter, but I might keep this one for myself. I can always make another.

Here is the link to the picture of it.

http://www.yesalbum.com/v001/SailorLiz/FiberProjects/finished_felted_purse.jpg

I bought another knitting magazine today and it also has some felting projects. Will keep you in mind after I read it.

Email me and maybe I can help you with posting your pictures on the web.

That is beautiful.... I have finished 3 thus far.. and the funny thing is that my little flap does not come down as far as yours.... LOL LOL... priceless eh?

I love what you did for the edging... I did edging on the one that is longer.. only 35 stitches... very similar to what you did.. BUT I chained with crochet and hand sewed it on the flap...

Yes.. I am going to try and have pics taken.. My friend has a camera and I am going to see if we can get a picture of each..

I want to do more and more.. because there are so many different embelishments that you can do to make it look different than the others..

For an example.. your flap coming down further.. I will try that next...

I love doing this almost as much as quilting..

I knitted it first, sewed up the sides, then felted the purse. I have a before picture of it knitted on my site below in the FiberFun category.

Karen,

Actually, the reason my flap is so long, is because I didn't make the body of the purse as long. I ran out of that particular wool I was using. The purse is actually a small size. It will make a good evening purse. My finished size of the purse was 6 1/2 " x 8 1/4". I'm sure yours are larger. I'm already planning on starting another. You are right, these are just as much fun to make as quilting.

OH.. now I get it!! WOW fellow "felter" you are really into the wool!!! I would love to venture into spinning..

I realize that I enjoy knitting because I can sit anywhere, anytime and do it!!!

I am on one now that is ORANGE... what I have planned is doing the hand embrodery yellow flowers in the front just below the flap area... I am hoping that I can get my friend to do pics of them so that I can share with you.

I have another pattern for a purse.. I not started it yet.. but I will sent it onward for you to check it out..

Love your bear. I have an instruction book on needle felting a bear. I haven't did one yet. It seems that everytime I go to needle felt something, I look at it and decide to make something else. I'm needle felting on a felted purse that I just finished. I thought I would embellish it with a pretty flower, but as I was working on it, I decided to make it a butterfly. I'll have to post a pic when it is finished.

I have some critters that I needle felted on my photo site (link below) under fiberfun.

Sailor Liz... I have not had a chance to do any felting in the past month of so, as I have moved into a house, where "painting" walls better be fun for me for a few more weekends.. LOL LOL :nervous:

your pics are wonderful as well..

Karen,

Painting rooms can be creative. I have done several different painting techniques when doing some of the rooms in our house. My daughters room, we ragged painted it and in my breezeway/entrance I did the ragging off method and stenciling. It was a lot of work, but fun.

I've started knitting another purse for felting. I worked on my butterfly last night, but I'm still not done with it.

hi! and thank you... actually I do not use patterns, I never have, every thing I make is one of a kind... here are two others... "Ashley" the cat and "Percy", my "flightless dragon!!" http://members.sparedollar.com/ittybittycritters/critters-001.jpg http://members.sparedollar.com/ittybittycritters/critters-033.jpg I think it's more like sculpting than anything... Sailor liz,
Have you ever treid to make "jointed" felties? you just make all the parts separate, then atatch them with a doll needle and thread, or floss (dental or sinew)... You get a very neat little critter! all mine are fully jointed and have glass or onyx bead eyes, they are also around 2-3" tall!
I have a lot of tips and tricks if you are interested let me know... I may even be able to put a pattern together for you! Pictures included.

ittycritters,

The bear pattern I have is for a jointed bear, but no I haven't tried one of those yet. I really like doing them, they are fun to make. I'd be interested in your tips & tricks and even a pattern. Sounds like fun to me. I love your dragon and cat. About how much time does it take you to make yours on average? Do you purchase your wool pre-dyed? I'm going to set up a place in my basement to start dying wool and yarn (with real dyes and not the food coloring or kool-aid). I did enjoy doing the little dying I did for the needle felting. I like all aspects of the process of working with fiber. The other craft I want to try someday is weaving. I think that looks interesting, also.

I have been doing this for about a year now, and it takes me around 4 hours from start to finish, that includes jointing, eye placement, thread accents and shading ( air brush marker... copic pens are the best) but that is approximate, as i NEVER just get to sit and do one all the way through, I have LOTS of interruptions! 2 kids ... need I say more ( 4 years and 7 months)!!??? but I have gotten a lot faster than when i started! I buy my wool pre-dyed, and I sometimes use natural colors, Linus and Ashley are done with natural Romny and corriedale wool. I use lots of different kinds, the easiest are romny and Corriedale, but i laso use marino and marino and silk blends.... they take a little more time to work with but have a stunning result. Percy was done with a marino and silk. hand dyed and it is so much cuter in person... and soft... wooo! I buy my wool off of ebay, as it is cheaper than buying around here, including shipping! the seller is Flying_ewe... i think that's how she has it... but you can find some stunning colors and quality though her!
I don't know if you are using a single needle or not, but i have found that using two needle held together is a faster way of working out the basic shapes, and if you are confident enough the details as well.

I think i have rambled on enough now...

We purchased a newer home (3 yrs old)... the previous owner NEVER painted one room.. they are ALL "primer - white".. We are both into "victorian" darks and needless to say the "AllSpice mustard" on the livingroom walls took 3 COATS :whacky:

We did the livingroom, dining room (open concept)... and today we need to put the 3rd coat on the adjoining wall to the kitchen. As you can see I had to check mail and develop my fingers on the keyboard for exercise use on the ROLLER.. :bluewink:

BTW.. We are doing a "faux finish" ( color "bookmaster red" with an orange glazing over top) for the fireplace that separates the LR from the DR... this is a new one for me....

I just need to get a picture of it. I'm also finishing up a couple of other needle felting projects that I started. I will post pics of those once they are done. :bluewink:

We had one of a kind... after each wash... :bg:

Liz...

I love making those things... I am up to #6... I purchased a digital camera, so I am going to try and put the pics up on the net..

Yep.. I am still painting :-( I am in the process of doing the "fun room" my crafty sewing space... I just purchase a Horn Quilter's dream table. now I need to send colors on the walls so that I can create fun at that great table.

I have the yarn to make that felted hat that you sent to me.. :-))

This is a child's size, but you could adjust the pattern for adult size.
