Has anyone ever tried an apple core quilt. What an excellent way to use up little scraps. There is a free pattern for this at Connecting Threads. www.connectingthreads.com I might just try one in red and cream, not a big quilt but something. Think it would be better done by hand. The curves can be tricky. MaryW

Hey Mary, I went to that website and the only thing I found was an applecore pincushion. Is that what you meant? If not, can you tell me where you found the pattern. By the way I printed up a copy of the pincushion, it looks really cute.

Yup, that's it. You can enlarge for a quilt easy enough. I also thought it would make a very interesting pillow for a couch or on a bed. Just four cores.

Mary, My quilting instructor for our Shepherds Ctr Classes is working on the apple core design quilt.. I guess its the same thing (also called Bitch's Axe or something like that) She is making a full sized quilt top..Makes a row at a time.. She marks the center of each curve, matches that and then stitches them together.. I Admire her patience, I would maybe last thru 6 or 8 pieces..I use a hatpin to make sure my edges start out even under the presser foot.. The design looks good with lots of contrast in the pieces, and I don't like it as well with low contrast in tones..Too Bland, you know.. Sew With Love

Hey Libby, I am still laughing over the " other "name for the Apple Core quilt. Thanks girl, I sure needed a good laugh this evening. Anyway, it's called Bitted Ax. For those that may not know, that's a double ax. In other words the head of the ax is 2 sided. Can cut with either side. |

The trick to doing curves like that is to do what I call an upside down smile lol You have one piece facing you, right side up. When you place the second fabric on top right side down you will notice the upside down frown. Fold those two pieces to find your centre, pin. Pin each end together, now ease the rest and pin. Sews up easy. Hard to describe but it does work easy on the machine. |

Beachgirl, Thanks for the corrected name of the pattern.. I was just repeating what I was told.. She said at the time , that she kinda doubted that was for real.. Joanne-- you described exactly like she puts her pieces together.. Too much like work for me.. If it doesn't go together easy, then I cannot do it..Quilting is a lately acquired skill for me, and I'm still trying to master the easy ones.. Sew With Love

Libby, I wasn't making fun of you or your teacher... honest. It just struck me so funny. I have the one my mom made years ago for a quilt to be used. Those are the only 2 names for it that I know of. As I'm sure you know all quilts seem to have several names. Must be from what area it came from maybe. I've never made a bitted ax ( apple core ) but mom said they were easy. Oh, just remembered, somewhere someone also called it a friendship quilt. I think they swapped squares to do it. Theresa |
