I recently moved to a much smaller place and no longer have a decent sized table for cutting out. I do have someone lined up to make me one of those 'craft' tables where the centre section is 16 or 17 inches wide and then there's a side that folds down on each side of the centre.

Has anyone on these boards made one of those tables and could maybe direct me to a pattern for it (can you tell I'm a sewer ...... need to have a pattern!) Actually, it's for the guy who's going to make my table. I haven't had any luck searching on the internet for a pattern and no luck at Lee Valley today either. These things don't look that difficult to make if a person has a pattern, so HELP, please???? Many thanks.

I bought mine from JoAnn's and it is one that folds in on it self. They go on sale fairly frequently (50% off) so it may be cheaper to buy one than to build one.

I got one for Xmas and love it. I have the ironing cover on it and rotary cutting boards that slide around. If you make one don't forget the wheels so it moves when you want it to.

I bought a pattern for one from eBay, but I can't find anyone to make it. :bluesad: Well, to be honest, I really can't afford it right now anyway. The one I have the pattern for is very nice, with a long drawer in the middle, but if I see them on sale at JoAnn's again I might just buy one.

I did a quick look for the pattern on eBay - didn't see it. But you might do a more careful search and see if you turn one up. I bought mine over a year ago. Yeah, I'm trying to be patient. But I NEED a table!

Dorothy, I have the same set up you have & love it. Have had it for several years now. Dh made me one before that . It was great but was larger. A friend of mine gave me a microave cart & dh took the top off & made a large fold down top for it. Used piano hinges for the fold down sides. He made a box for on top of the stand & set the top on top of that for the height I needed. Put rollers on it with locks. It had a nice drawer plus a storage cabinet underneath. It was just too wide for me to store away when folded down. I did use it for several years. Now he uses it in his wood working shop.

Jada,

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I really appreciate it.
When you can get them, they cost $399.99 at Fabricland .....ridiculous when it's only about $50 worth of materials.
Thanks again

This is the simplest solution to several issues: no space, no money, not much skill!

Take a sheet of 3/4 plywood, sanded on one side (you can buy it that way and its fairly smooth.) Cut it so that the long side is not longer than your bed, then cut it down the center so its 2 feet wide and as long as your bed. (Most DIY stores like Home Depot will even do that cutting for you, just premeasure your bed so that you know the length you want. Plywood comes in 4x8 ft sheets) Then attach several hinges (i used 5 just to be sure) so that its hinged. To use, just set it on folding saw horses (the folding plastic ones are easy to manage) I use a folding cardboard cutting surface on it, but if you simply covered it with wallpaper or contact paper or shelf paper for a smooth surface, that would work too.

Anyhow its cheap, stores easily by sliding under a bed, and in a pinch makes a buffet table (might want to add a third sawhorse for that tho!)

The cardboard tables from Sew/Fit Company are great and come apart and go together fast, taking up very little space. They aren't real cheap but mine has lasted for years and years. I used it all the time before I got the other cutting table.

Hi everyone...I am new to the forum, but have an idea that works for me. I also didn't have a good place to cut...bed and floor were out of the question, bad back. We had an extra interior door laying around, so my husband mounted it over my sewing table (actually just a large flat desk with no drawers). He put a 2 x 4 on the wall and anchored it to the studs. Then used the hindges from the door to mount the door to the 2 x 4. I have a couple of screen door hangers at the top most portion of the door to keep it against the wall secure. I have it at a height that I don't have to bend over to lay a pattern and cut. It is great for all sorts of crafts...sure keeps the back from hurting. And at 7', there is plenty of room to lay most patterns without having to roll a portion.
