Hi, y'all. I think I might've made a mistake. I applied for a sewing position online a few days ago. The people contacted me today and said that they are looking for a seamstress to make high quality neckties and bowties. How hard are these to make?

I make ties for my litle guys all the time, but I tried making one for my husband and uugh was it hard. It came out twisted and just really cheap looking. Over all the process is fairly simple. I think my main problem was that I didn't get it cut out in the true bias. :bg:

They are easy and they are quick. You need to purchase a couple of patterns though and decide which you like. There are differences from company to company concerning how wide they are and how they are folded. When you do your neckband, go ahead and invest the dollar or so for the bow tie hook and adjuster. It saves a lot of time over doing the hook and eyes (about 10 or 12). I did 85 one year with 12 sewn in eyes. I used the button attachment and setting on my machine and they went very quick, but I didn't enjoy a second of it. The hook and buckle just slide on and you sew the other side...very quick and easy and well worth the investment. I have done many of these for high school choirs and wedding parties. I have also done matching dress vests (no back) and cumberbuns.

Thanks for your help. Now, one more question...what type of interfacing do I use in the ties? The man wants them to be really high quality.

Ideally, the good ties have a heavy woven bias cut interfacing used in tailoring. If you go to purchase it you would find it bolted and it would be grey or tan in color. If I were to use a non-woven I would probably use one layer of heavy weight or two layers of medium weight. The bias cut woven folds and hangs beautifully and gives like the tie.

Just remember, when pressing the finished product, be very careful and stuff it with a padded product so you don't press a heavy line on the outside of the necktie edges.. No hard creases or lines.. supposed to round softly at the edges.. I sewed an old towel into the shapes I needed for pressing aids when I was making neckties..

When you sew for people (and really need the money) it is like that. When I left work, I left half our yearly salary behind. Supporting a family of 5 wasn't at all that easy so I think I almost did it all...but I did NOT make a wedding dress...I made some bridesmaids dresses that were actually a short wedding dress (advanced Vogue) pattern, but they were for bridesmaids and the beading way only on the edges.
