Hi, I am new to this forum today. I am laying out a pattern and I do not know the difference between right side of fabric and wrong side. Why is that important. I used to sew a long time ago and decided to pick it up again and have forgotten alot of things. On the layout I'm using to make a Tunic one side is to be cut on the right side and the other on the wrong side - can someone tell me why this is important to do so. The interefacing is also set up the same way. Can anyone help. thank you |

i usually see these type of instructions if i have to cut two peices of something and i have to cut the with the fabric laid all the way out (one layer) that is because you normally cut two peices at the same time with the fabric folded right sides together but if the piece being cut is too wide then you have to lay the fabric out one layer and cut like that i would just cut the pattern piece one side up and then cut it again with the pattern piece facing down. As far as what is right side vs wrong side when you get it from the fabric store the way the fold it is right sides together....but just eye ball the fabric and make the side that you want to be seen to others as your right side and the other side as your wrong side....sometimes when you cant find just what you need or want in a color the wrong is just the thing i hope i did not make things worse for you and i hope that you understand what i am trying to say..... |

And for some fabrics, it is very hard to tell right/wrong side. Often once I prewash, I can't tell right vs wrong side. When this happens, I just pick a side, call it the "right" side, and remain consistent, in case there's something subtle about the grain that I didn't notice. Andrea

Usually you can tell the right side of the fabric by looking. (one side is almost always dull and the colors are 'off '. On better fabrics that have a pattern, the selvages have a registration strip. (on the selvage there are a series of colored dots that are the colors in the fabric, the fabric name and manufacturer). Sometimes you can tell by the selvage, one side will be smooth, the other side rough. (same with the fabric..one side may be smoother than the other. Rough side in, smooth side out). Do they mean the fabric is to be cut wrong side out, OR that the pattern is to be laid wrong side down ??? (ie, the printed side down to make the pattern come out right side up) Chrys
