Other than replacing the zipper is there any way to stop a zipper from opening on its own? I have a newly purchased pair of jeans that I've already altered to fit and now I find that when I wear them the zipper creeps down whenever I sit. Yikes! Is there any solution other than replacing it?

Does the zipper not lock when you zip it up ??? If it is a new garment, I would take it back if the zipper is defective.. Now, I will say that I have seen a pair of jeans that had a zipper that had no locking mechanism on them.. But, the person that bought them was small and there was no pressure on the zipper, so it did not zip down very often.. She didn't seem to have a problem.. Just in case you don't know about locking the zipper, look on the backside of the zip up tab and you will see a little sharp nib that you are supposed to press in place after you zip up to the top.. (just press against the zipper teeth and it should hold in place and lock itself )

Libs, I don't imagine she can take them back if she has altered them to fit.
With no locking teeth I think you're stuck....with replacing the zip. I have a pair of self removing trousers as well, I wear a big jumper over them to hide the drafts! I can't face changing the zip in jeans.

Its frustrating, but you can pin a safety pin over the top of the zip from the wrong side to keep it up, but that is aggravating every time you have to go to the ladies room..

If you pull the zipper up and put a safety pin across the zipper teeth just under the pull from the inside the zipper won't go down..but you'd better not be in a hurry if you go to the bathroom..... I've done this and it has worked for several years without wearing out the zipper (that was what I initially expected).

I've done the safety pin thing too...hide it inside the pants so it doesn't show and no one but you will know it's there. (and it IS a pain when ya gotta go...oh well...) Sometimes on ready to wear, they don't get the zipper lined up correctly and one side will have a small bulge at the top (like a little ripple) unless you can straighten it out, by either ripping it out a bit and re- sewing, you'll always need the saftey pin. Thats what causes the zipper not to lock correctly, the teeth are misaligned..

I love it! Self-removing trousers....tee hee. I realize now that the stopper is there but either broken off or worn down. It catches sometimes but most of the time it doesn't. I think I'll just replace the zipper. My weight has fluctuated tremendously in the past year or so with some health problems and these jeans seem to 'give a little' so that I'm comfortable no matter what size I am. In other words, 'they are keepers.' Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

I seem to remember having this problem on a really comfortable (except for that) pair of pants when I was a teen. I think I pulled a small coated rubber band (for pony-tails) through the hole in the end of the zipper, looped it through itself, then hooked the loop over the jeans button.

Can't say it didn't look silly....

Replace the thing.

I am doing a jacket that requires an open end zipper full length in front, now there is a part a t the bottom that looks like plastic,my question is should I sew over this end bit with the sewing machine? The fabric is denim medium weight.I dont want to break my needle doing this.I am using a size 14 needle in my sewing machine.ALso theres the hem allowance to concider when installing the zipper.
If at first you don't suceed, try-try again!

I do. It isn't really great for your needle because it will dull it but when I am sewing down a seperating zipper I do sew the plastic to the fabric. I'm not sure that it is always done that way in ready-to-wear. (Of course, I do not sew across the zipper bottom like I would in a regular set-in zipper.)
