Okay - I am a serious newbie and this is probably a silly question, but I have to ask. Why is the crothch area on pants sooo different from front to back? And what is the proper way to stitch it? I have tried 2 different patterns and on both one side is more triangular and one is more squared for lack of better description. If I line up the notches, etc., that the pattern says to line up then the crotch area looks strange and I do not know which seam line to follow - front or back. Any help would be appreciated - Greatly!!

The back is lower than the front of the crotch for two reasons. One is that we are shaped that way, the other is that whne you sit you need more easement in the seat than the front.

Depending upon the type of zipper (if you have one) that you are putting in, the easiest way for me to tell you to attach the pants is to attach the side front to the side back on the left or right side and sew the seam up the inside leg. Then do the same to the other side. Once this has been done you'll have two pant legs, hopefully one left and one right. Turn one side right side out and one wrong side out. Slip the pant leg that is right side out INSIDE the one that is wrong side out and you'll have a large (kind of) "U" shape. Match your notches and sew around this "U". I assemble the pants both ways, by front assembly and back assembly or by assembling the legs first. For the sake of repairs, sewing the legs first helps because if I ever rip pants out, it is almost always in the seat. This method makes seat repairs MUCH easier. Both are correct. Also, it is easier to line up the inside leg seams this way.
