My daughter has just staggered home from town proudly carrying a black and gold hand cranked singer. It has a serial number but no other information as to which model it is. The front of the tension dial is missing (the bit that tells you whether you are increasing or recreasing the tension) but the tensions discs and spring are both present and it seems to be in fair working order. Goes along very smoothly indeed - I have found a PDFManual of a machine which looks very like it on the Singer site - but wonder if anyone could help me to work out which it is - there are so many parts listed for different machines I don't know where to look for a tension dial, or even if I need to bother.

It is a real trip down memory lane for me as I had one the same for my very first machine which my parents bought for me out of a charity shop too. This is the girl who I make the reenactment clothing for - she wants to sew herself.

Congrats on a fine old machine! Here are a couple of sites that might help with dating or specific model numbers:

The old Singer tensions did not have any kind of a dial. They were just a thumb nut that tightened the spring against the disks.

Why thank you people, I knew I could rely on you - it seems we have a 1914 made in Clydesbank model - possibly in the 9W series.
Bill, I knew I could rely on you to give me the information that I needed! Thank you for your expertese. It hums along a treat.

I have a beautiful smooth sewing black and gold 28K Singer handcrank that was made in 1901 at the Scotland plant. When I got her I also got the original machine book, TONS of attachments and needles, the carved coffin case, and locking key for the case. All of the decals are almost perfect. She is a sweetie. If I had a chance (and money) to lay my hands on another...I'd do it in a heartbeat. Yours is well worth the effort to restore. There are people all over the place that restore these and you should be able to get parts and info easily.

I purchased mine on E-bay from a guy in San Antionio...who had been all over the place in the (US) military and collected old Singers. He had a sewing machine museum and retail shop in San Antionio, Tx. I looked for his info but couldn't find it, my daughter wiped out a bunch of my files on this computer (sorry). He sells regularly on E-Bay (I always look under antique sewing machines) when I want to browse and dream. If you can find him he might be able to hook you up with someone locally who could restore or help you restore or get parts for your machine.

This is one of the coolest sites I've found on the machines. Just in case you haven't seen it:

I hope you really enjoy your machine!!!! Congratulations!!!!

Thanks Pam, Katie is trying to work out whether she can carry it back to Uni with her - unlikely. She has booked me to give her lessons in the summer - she used to get really cross with my machine so I hope she doesn't with this one!

They are very relaxing to use. A lot of people take them with them on trips and such and sew even in the car or van (not me) because they don't need the electricity. I think they are really cool and if they are well adjusted they sew as well as any other straight stitch machine.

I think she will get on fine - it purrs. Tony was concerned that she would get fed up of cranking the handle but it has a soporific effect all of it's own. Kind of like the sound you hear in the distance on a Sunday afternoon when you can hear the slow sonorous tick tick of a Grandfather clock in the hall. A sleepy sort of lavender beeswax feel to it.

So are they marketed in the US? Do you mind telling us what type of writing you like to do?

I have sold to the states. Amazon has them on back order - 6 weeks or so.
My publisher is Kevin Mayhew http://www.kevinmayhew.com/
search under Children and young people for Janice Hodge and you will find them and a description of the interiors. They are basically teaching materials for Christian kids clubs.

Thanks - I don't make a lot - last year it must have been all of £30! More exciting is as they are teaching materials that my thoughts reach a lot of children. This means I must be doubly sure of what I say or I could damage people more than help them, Isn't that the same for all teachers? My next book (number 4) was planned out but my hard drive fried and although I had backed it up the disc had corrupted. I haven't had the heart to do it again - maybe the Almighty was trying to tell me something.....

It might not have been His idea. I hope you find the (re)inspiration for your next book soon! You must be on the right track or that probably wouldn't have happened.

Anyone for a verse by verse exegesis of Philippians for 7-11 year olds? I could do Collosians or Ephesians if you prefer. It was Acts that got fried. The notes are all there - just have to get them written out - these things have to wait until the summer holidays from school.

Reading your posts got me curious about my Singer Hand Crank Sewing Machine. I found it in an antique shop here in Canada about ten years ago and just had to have it. (It was $135 and how my husband and I debated whether or not we should spend this "fortune" on it. Hearts prevailed over common sense and I carried it home with all the pride and joy of a finder of treasure.)
The machine works beautifully and has all it's parts, a few attachments and an original, though badly tattered manual. I checked out the sites mentioned in the posts above and matching the serial number, I discovered that my machine is an 1874 model. Oh, how I wish it could talk and tell me where it's been and what it's done for the past 131 years.

Now I'm inspired to do more research - and take it off the closet shelf to put on display!
Thanks gals, for the fun, today. I never know what I'll find when I click on this, my favorite sewing site!

" - it seems we have a 1914 made in Clydesbank model - possibly in the 9W series."

Can't be a 9W from Scotland, Magot. The 9W was really just the left over Wheeler & Wilsons that Singer sold under their name after they bought them out. It was probably one of the best machines ever made for it's time, but they were all made in the US.
