Who is sewing for prom this year? It is all the chatter with the young girls this time of year. What are you sewing and what type of fabric are you going to use?

I am not sewing my dd's dress this year, but next year for her Senior prom - you are going to love this. My Dd and her 3 best buds have always been the "Disney Princesses" (Sometimes I think they think they really are princesses). Everyone at school knows that and it is sort of a running joke. Well for prom next year they each want a princess dress made. My DD is Aurora - her buds are Belle, Cinderella, and Jasmine. Jasmine is going to be sort of an improvisation. Here is the challenge - I am just beginning to sew. My DD really wants me to make it for her. I would rather pay someone to do it, but she says it would not be as special. So needless to say I will be practicing like crazy for the next year!!

My2girlies I have the pattern for the Cinderella gown if anyone needs it. Prom dresses are not that hard to do. I always do a muslin of the pattern and then make the adjustments from there.

I have just helped my young friend make her first garment - a prom dress. Halter neck, bias cut, backless purple satin with a slight train. There is a v shaped insert in the front (just under the bust) in pink which flows around to the back at the bottom of the fish tail. Good job considering she has made a cushion cover before..

My dd got a steal on her prom dress...$400 radiant beaded dress for $125. I was going to have to take about six inches off and rebead the bottom, but I gave that up when a friend offered to do it for $25. The lower beads need to be moved up about 6 inches all the way around, and of course, because it is beaded, I need to do a few little repairs with the left overs.

My dd's twin bro? Well, I bought his tux this year (they are both Jrs.). I'm making his bow tie and matching vest to go with his girlfriend's dress. It is cotton candy pink. My son is 6'4" and has a 44 chest and 34 waist...pretty interesting with the pink...anyway, I bought a cheap tux shirt and added the button holes for the studs (saved about $50). When we were purchasing his suit, the salesman told him that the guys are writting the boy's name and the girl's name with a heart (what else) on the neckband of the tie and on the other side, the school, prom and year. Of course, he HAD to have that...so I embroidered in a darker pink on the neckband. He was also told that was added to the garter...so guess what? I ended up putting it on a ribbon and attaching it to the garter (suprisingly, it is kinda cool...don't tell him I said so.)

So...my dd wants her date's bow tie (no lettering) and vest to match her dress too...so I am making those and doing a garter for her too. Now she is attending proms for two different schools two weeks apart. She is going with a friend that didn't have a date for his prom, so she is very excited but she is pulling a dress that she already had for the other prom.

Well my DD's prom days are over :(, but I am going to start on a prom type dress for my D gf who is in the Ms. Michigan contest. I did her dressform this weekend with duck tape, and she had already picked out the pattern and material. Does this count? I have made my DD's prom dresses and I think they are loads of fun. All the different traditions from each year and even the styles, made it something for me to remember. Having the D try to help and sitting there watching and talking are memories I wouldn't trade for all the little moments when I would say "Why am I doing this?"

My DD is too young for proms right now, but she has already asked me to make her prom dress and her wedding dress!

I've already made several fancier dresses for her for my wedding, her concerts, and the renaissance events we go to. So I'm sure I'll do OK!

plrlegal - i may take you up on the pattern. I will definately make a muslin/ Hopefully this summer. I figure I will have to combine several patterns since I cannot find an adult size Aurora pattern. Plus she wants to wear long gloves and not have long sleeves. Her prom this year is next week-end. We found a RTW in dallas - thank goodness. It has beautiful beadwork and we were able to find very, very similar beads and had shoes dyed to match and we are in the process of gluing beads on those to match the design on her dress. Would not recommend this - it is soooo time consuming. We also glued some on the ends of some "invisible" bobby pins so that they can be worked into her up-do. She and the other princesses are having an after-prom tea party and breakfast for about 30 kids this year. I can only imagine what all they will dream up next year. Yikes!!! Pre-prom photos are at our house. Those goofy girls even printed and mailed out invitations for that, too. Oops - back to topic. Do you use a special needle for bridal/prom dresses. I have been reading, but not found anything. Oh my, the things we undertake for our kids!!

nobody HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
Last year I made my babysitter's dress from a picture she drew, it came out great but was a tad stressful (She now is a student at NSCAD Nova Scotia College of Arts and Design) but these young designers can be picky!

She was pretty good about actual limitations of fabric and gravity once I explained if we did the back of the dress as low and as bare as she wished her chest was going to fall out the side with out sticky tape

Still.... the prom kids are better to deal with than the bridezillas!

I'm making the grad dress for my niece, it's a princessy style (full skirt, scoop neck, spaghetti straps) and it's made of pale blue crushed velvet... very pretty

All this talk of prom dresses brings back wonderful memories. My girls are well past the prom stage, and the wedding stage. My youngest said she didn't want me to make her a dress...she didn't like "home made" things. But after the oldest got rave reviews on her dress, the youngest decided "home made" wasn't so bad. I miss making those dresses, but now have grandkids and friends grandkids to sew for, so it helps some.

I was at my mum's house the other day and she pulled out my grade 12prom dress!! I can't believe she still had it!! I musta looked like I was made of pink frosting! It was the 80's and very pink and fluffy with big roses on the shoulder, crinoline, sash and layers of organza over white satin,
Sooooo different from what the girls are wearing today (and yes I made the dress :bg: )
