I'm making a fancy dress for the first time. Right now, I'm working on the fitting muslin, and for some reason, I feel that the zipper would be less obtrusive at the side seam. Also, because I did a lot of alterations to the back of the pattern, I want to have more control over the back. Does anyone have any advice or comments about moving the zipper to a side seam? Is this a more complicated placement? Am I going to get wrinkles, puckers, pooches? I'm grateful to be able to learn from the experience of so many of you. I hope that I can give back someday. Thanks, Kate |

You can move zippers and darts etc. as long as you can get in the dress! I am wondering if the neck opening will be large enough or will you need to make a facing that allows for this with a single button at the top of the slit? Is the skirt gathered/flared where a pocket could be used for the side opening with a zipper for the bodice sewn in from the armcye to the waist with a hook and thread eye there. Or, a long zipper for the bodice/skirt area......this could be the "invisable" zipper, care should be taken at the waist seam area for easy closing, elimanate the bulk by layering the seams. If it is a princess style, that is even better....just use the instructions that come with the zipper. Quite an undertaking for a beginner but it can be done with a little home work. Betty |

I sometimes do an inserted zipper in the back where the opening is at the full part of the shoulders instead of the top and goes into the hips. A hidden zipper in this application is very nice, however, you still have the problems about whether or not you have enough space in the neck opening. It also works better if your fabric has some stretch. Moving the zipper to the side works in some things but it is easier to get into a dress with the zipper there if the dress is not so terribly fitted. Personally, I side with Betty on this. A well inserted hidden zipper is not very noticible or difficult to put in (just a little pull shows).
