I'm not new to sewing, but my neighbor ( 10 years old) wants me to help her make a baby quilt. My area is bridal and tailoring...have never attempted to quilt. I told her we would learn together. Any suggestions for keeping it simple? This will be a gift that SHE makes. She is so excited to be doing this.

Make it big blocks, or strips (3 to a block) 6" square. Use 'gender neutral' baby colors, not all blue or pink). I'd go with cotton (not flannel) or fleece. Easy to sew and quilt. Just stitch in the ditch and/or make simple designs for the quilting (squares, circles, hearts...marked in chalk or pen...be sure they can be washed out....pre wash fabric if you use cotton). A good size would be 45"X45"...(or so) simple large borders....
Maybe sew on some already (prepackaged) embroidery if you want....(they have all kinds of things in the stores these days...) simple shapes, animals. (NO buttons or anything the baby might pull off and choke on).

I found a fabric baby quilt top (by the yard) at Hancocks.. It is yellow print and has the alphabet in blocks about 7 or 8 inches square. This had a co-ordinating all over print for the back. just 1 yard of each plus the batting and thread is all she would need to buy.. Simple layer, sew , and turn, sew little opening closed.. Then you could help her decide how to quilt it or tie it.. This would be enough for a beginner lesson I think.. She would have only good memories of this and be ready for a new lesson on her next project.. IMHO I think something like this would be great for that age and not overwhelm her.. You know , I admire this youngster. Her first thought is to make something for someone else.. That is a great attribute.. I send her a hug..

I think a project like LFLibby's idea sounds great.

Keep it super simple and enjoyable. That's a great age to learn. :) Hope it goes great.
