I've not tried anything like that - I assume it is t-shirt fabric? When I have seen things like this they don't appear to have any sewing to stabilse the edges - just chopped away. I would suggest you get an old t-shirt that nobody cares what happens to an practice. I would put a cutting mat inside the shirt (to protect the other side) pull the fabric quite tight and cut it with a craft knife. I think that would work better than scissors. You may need to experiment on the old ones to work out where it would be a good idea to cut or you could end up with part of yourself hanging out in an indelicate manner! Then again, that may be the effect you are looking for! The cuts look to be in different directions and sizes. Maybe you can get some old shirts from charity shops to try out things on. Looks fun!

My best guess is that Jan is pretty much right on this. My sister used to get really upset because she would pay almost $100 on a pair of jeans and her twin sons would take them out and hang them on the line and use a shot gun on them to get the effect they wanted.

One really interesting thing about his shirt is how the sleeve is split and dropped down while a piece from the shirt is taken over the arm as a sleeve. My guess is that this is a really large shirt otherwise you wouldn't be able to breathe when you did that. As I look at it, I'm not even exactly sure that it is just one shirt. It might be two with a sports bra (almost needs to be unsaid) underneath. It looks like there is one shirt at the waist that goes up to our right (her left) at the arm while there is one at the shoulders that covers her right side.

I agree with Pam that it is 2 sleeveless shirts ripped to hang that way, with the sports bra underneath. I am thinking they are a knit. My D has a shirt something like that, ripped in certain places. Hers is only one shirt, the binding around the neck is ripped from the shoulder area so she can wear it off shoulder. It has a few more rips in it to show more skin, but hers is only one shirt, not a fancy as that one.

Also, check out www.craftster.org
They are a website devoted to sewing and crafting, mostly by teenagers with similar style to the pic you linked. Lots of wonderfully inspirational work there and many tutorials.
