Anyone ever tried it? I watched an episode of "America Quilts Creatively" on PBS about it. You can use fabrics that don't match (even ugly why did I buy that? fabric) and over dye them all with the same color dye. Then the fabric looks like it all belongs together. They had a nice example of fabrics overdyed with a denim color and another set with a tan dye. That one made the fabrics look tea dyed. I'm thinking of trying it with some old fabrics I don't know what esle to do with. |

What a simple yet sneaky idea Bama! It is the same principle as underpainting a watercolour with a light yellow wash - ties all the colours together yet doesn't detract from the colour washes that you are putting over it.

Jan, Do you do watercolours? I gathered up some old fabrics and over-dyed them with tan. I LOVE this idea. I'm glad I saw that show. I tossed in several different colors of fabrics. I'm really pleased with the way some out-of-date mauve fabrics turned out. And also some yellows. They turned out a nice country gold color. I even threw in a lime green. It toned down alot. I still had room in the washer so I tossed in a couple of pillow panels that were a little too bright for my house. I like them now. I cut all of the fabrics in half (except the panels) before I started, so I'm going to try the other half with denim blue tomorrow. |

Yes, enough to please me, though I haven't painted in ages. I used to teach some kids basic techniques - they would come round my house and we would work on things together. It got hard to think of simple projects they could do that would be finished in an hour after a while and I started to work more so we came to a natural end after a year. It will be interesting to see how the denim dyed stuff comes out - maybe you'll be making an indigo quilt - if it is too dark won't it all be variations in texture and shade rather than colour - fun to experiment! love and kisses, Jan

Hi Krystal! Yes, just tan Rit dye for a tea dyed look. I used one bottle of liquid Rit Dye with the washer on the lowest level and added one cup of salt. The directions are on the bottle. I didn't know I got that program til a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to the Tivo's suggestions. And hubby thought we didn't need Tivo. Here's the website: www.americaquiltscreatively.com I think the overdye directions are in the 400 series. |
