Hello! This may probably seem like a silly question. I am currently working on a (full) circle skirt, I drew the pattern according to measurements (worked out the radius etc.) and did a half doughnut pattern. I tried it on the person it was for and it seems really tight on the waist, although the measurements were all correct. The waistline is not straight, obviously, as it is cut out as a perfect circle, so it kind of droops down. Could this be the reason for not fitting properly? Will it be ok once I put on the waistband or must I let it out? Having never sewn a circle skirt before, I'm not sure about the fitting part... I know it's one of the simplest things to do... but... Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

The reason you do the fitting is so you can make changes before you put the waste band on. I'd make sure it fit before I put the band on.

You also have a seam allowance in there...you would be suprised how much difference that makes in the radius.

Yes, Pam, that's completely right! The measurements are completely correct, but of course, the seam allowance makes an enormous difference and I hadn't thought about it! Thanks

I have always made my circular skirts with a pattern. When I think about they way that they are made, the waist is more flat than a perfect circle. If I were to make a circular skirt, I would start with straight or a-line skirt pattern. I would place the center on a straight line and I would draw straight out 90 degrees, starting from the side waist line at the top of the seam (not the seam allowance). This would give me not only the correct waist measurment, but the correct seam allowance for the center. Then I would proceed to draw a quarter of a circle from the waistline with probably a string, moving it along the waistline to keep the distance from the waist the same. I would do the same to the skirt back. Most of the circular skirts I have made have a seam at the side and a zipper in the left seam.

However, given the skirt you have, you can put it on a waistband and put elastic in the waistband. That will take care of any extra space you have in the hole (many of the felted skirts that are in the pattern books have elastic in the waist instead of a zipper). The pattern with the elastic have a double felted waistband and I don't like the thickness. If I were to do this myself (for myself), I might line the back of the waistband to make it thinner. If it is too small you will change that some with the seam around the top.
