I've been reading some of the threads and now I'm confused.
If a machine is advertised as a 4x4 machine, but we can use
a 5x7 hoop, does this mean we can do a design to fill the
5x7?

I've been thinking of getting the Brother d180/150 or the Bernina 600
and they are all 4x4. I like some of the brother designs but will
I be able to do ALL the bros designs on the 180 or 150? I had no
idea the 150 was a workhorse and I can get that low on ebay.
I might buy a Bernina 600. Can I use brother cards on the Bernina
Deco 600? Can I buy a hoop for a 600 that is 5x7?

Also, when enlarging a design, can I do that by 20% or so on
these machines?

Lots of questions here......:) Any answers will help me make my
choice now.

Thanks!HG

On more thing to ask.... I like pfaff designs. I have
a book/brochure on all of them but on the bottom of
each page it states: Hoop size 140x225 for every design.
There are large designs and small designs and for
each one it gives this measurement.

Could I use a Pfaff design on a Brother 180D or 150?
I know I would have to get a Magic Box or Amazing Box
to do it, but if the design is just larger than 4x4 will
I just have to rehoop to continue the pattern? Is this
what 4x4 really means?

I think the experienced folks here will understand
my confusion now....

Unfortunately, 4x4 means that you can only stitch a 4x4 design in one pass. You either need to have a multi-position hoop with a split design, or re-hoop your material and stabilizer.

I believe the Bernina Deco uses the same format as the PE150 (the 150 is what I started out with...my hubby just bought me a new Babylock Ellageo that can do a 6x10 field...what a guy!) So the cards may work.

If you get designs off the internet or another card that has a different format, you can change the format using Embird (which costs about $89 from www.secretsof.com ) or a free program called Ambassador which can be downloaded here: http://www.pulsemicro.com/Product%20Pages/tdgmlbp/tdgmlbp_ambassador.htm

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to post!

Unfortunately, 4x4 means that you can only stitch a 4x4 design in one pass. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to post!

So, if I have a design that is for a 5x7 field, I can reduce the image on a 4x4 machine slightly and then stitch 4 inches of the design and rehoop, and stitch the rest of the 2 inches of the design?

I see this as trying to fit a medium pizza into a toaster over that takes lunch size only. Is it possible to split a design in half, reposition, rehoop and continue with the large design or will I have to minimize everything?

Does embird and ambassador take the place of a Magic Box or Ultimate Box?

Also, are 5x7 hoops for 5x7 designs? I was told by a dealer the 5x7 hoops are for 4x4 designs????

I'm new and learning, too, so I'm always happy to see LOTS of questions and happier to see what answers come! I have a Bernina Deco and what I've learned is that it will accept any cards with a PES format. So it will accept the Brother and Babylock cards, if I'm understanding correctly.

The actual measured size of the hoops doesn't really correspond with the size they stitch out. My hoop for doing 4x4 designs actually measures out at 5x7. But you have to take into account the space on each side of the presser foot that you need, plus some "wiggle room" to trim stitches and such.

You might want to invest in the multi-position hoop to use with split designs. What this has is two (or three) sets of the little metal buttons that you connect to the embroidery arm. You would split your design (if you didn't buy it already split) with software (Embird can do it). Stitch one part, then move the hoop to the next set of buttons and stitch the next part. That way you don't need to re-hoop and try to line up that last part of the design with the new part. You could also use the multi-position hoop to do a 4x4 design, move the hoop, then put a separate design or name above or below, also without re-hooping your material. If you're splitting a longer design you shouldn't need to make it smaller unless it's wider than the 4".

Embird and Ambassador would not replace either of the boxes because they in and of themselves can't move designs to a card without the box. I have the Simplicity Smart Box that I purchased at Walmart. It works with both my PE150 and Ellageo. My Smart Box software can convert designs and automatically unzips them, but couldn't resize or edit without other software, which is why I purchased Embird.

I also recently bought the Embird Studio so I can learn to digitize. I've done a couple of things but have been too chicken to do a test stitch!

Hoop-It-All sells large multi-position hoops for most machines, but you need to make sure that your software can use the hoop sizes.

Embird has settings for most of the HIAs and I believe it also has settings for the Brother multiposition hoop. Jess... don't be a chicken diddly... jump in with both feet and try out your STudio.... it's pretty intuitive and there are some pretty good video tutorials right with the program.. also check out www.sadiasews.com she has some decent tutorials for Embird... I believe she does most of her digitizing with Embird STudio... Although I also have PEDesign, I mostly use Studio for the little digitizing that I do... BTW.... have you voted yet on the digitizing contest on Threadstop?? I have 2 designs entered... I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but hey, even if I don't win, it was great experience!!

just my 2 cents...

Yup, I already voted! Don't know which ones were yours, but I liked them all!

I'll have to bite the bullet and try stitching the ones I digitized. It will have to wait though, because I'm painting and setting up my new sewing room, and I'm moving very slowly for some reason.
